I rode without a tach for too long; I go by sound and feel; "Use the Force Luke." My EGC is the first bike that came with a tach; never look at it. I keep my head up and eyes on the road; keeps me from hitting billboards, etc.

don't have a tach so i shift by feel and sound.

i've never driven anything but stick shift so i'm used to it.

i'm sure i've been up to the redline revving it to get around some asshat though.

Wallaby,
Nope, never been to a dragstrip, but does racing 911s in IMSA at the 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring, Road Atlanta, Road America, Watkins Glen, and Laguna Seca count? Sure, if you build up a big motor than the redline and your torque and horsepower curves are going to change. But, even then we weren't necessarily running to the red line or rev-limiter because you were still beyond your peak torque or HP point. Typically you try and keep the motor in a very specific rev range in order to be maximizing your acceleration off the corner or your top-speed down the straight. Once you pitch over those two peaks you're just straining the motor without any kind of gain. Not to mention stressing the motor to possibly grenade. Like they say, "to finish first, first you have to finish!"

Guess I’ve been bad cuz I’ve figured the rev limiter was there to save the motor from revving into dangerous territory…..am I missing something? I don’t try to hit the limiter, but I’ve done it a few times and haven’t been too concerned about it. I don’t really wrap it out too hard that much anymore.

Why redline it unless in a predicament where evasive action, power is needed.
If you have to ask,.... you wouldn't understand.

Thing is, on a harley, reving the engine doesn't gain you anything. I switch at 3500, maybe 4k max, reving the **** out of it higher than that doesn't seem to accelerate much faster anyway.

These engines aren't made for revs or speed. If you want to go fast you have to buy a susuki hyabusa. Harleys are made for putting around nice and slowly, looking cool and swank, checking out the chicks in the cars as they're drooling out the windows at the bad azzz biker dude...

It's all about posing, not about speed.
