I have been running ape hangers for about three years now. I have a set of 14's on my Ultra that put them just under my shoulder height and a set of 14's on my fatbob that are about 2" above my shoulder. In the past few months my shoulders have started to bother me some and I am starting to consider going to a lower bar on my fatbob. My comfort level is very good on the Ultra so I do not want to change it but the fatbob bars could stand to come down a couple inches. I was curious if anyone else developed similar problems after riding apes for a few years.
The touring bikes sit different, than the other models. I know the low beach bar type bars make my shoulders hurt after a days ride. Try shorter ones on the Fat Bob and see if it changes.Shoulder level and lower are good. Anyhigher, and I'm not diggin it
We run 18" apes on a 1" riser & they dont cause my ole man any problems. Now me on the other hand...I cant drive the darn bike with the apes. I cant control it...lol.My shoulder still hurts from when I ran her into the ditch a few months ago..lol
I have never liked the feel other than going stright down the road, but that is me. I could see where there might be some strain on some riders. You have to adjust to what feels the best for you.
The plus side of apes is the pits get a nice breeze in the summer.
I had 20" Apes on My Rigid Frame Sporty for Many Years... My Hands were forehead Height...I Did NOT have any shoulder strain... What I Did experience was in Stop and Go Traffic, I Rode in and Around NYC/Long Island in those Days with a Club... Was I would get tingles in my hands from Blood Lose.. LOL I was Pumping The Blood right down my arm every time I Squeezed the Clutch or Front brake...
I want to get Apes for My '06 Electra Glide Now..I Like them, and Think I will find them very comfortable for the long Distances I ride Now.
Thats My 2Cents... Worth Every Penny. God Bless, "Country Fried"
I run 18" on my wide glide, puts them about 1" above shoulder height. I would never go back! I'm 6'5 though. They are a little tall for most who I let sit on her, but most can't reach my extended forwards either.

I had 16" apes on with 4" risers. (Softtail springer). They never hurt my shoulders. If you are going to mostly be riding around town its a blast and i loved them the 5 years i have i ridden with them. After a 700 mile 1 day trip, i couldn't feel my left hand two fingers for almost a month. It started to scare me a little, they just didn't get any blood (Apes were well higher then my shoulders). I am glad now that i have drag bars, although i do miss the look of the apes. No shoulder issues though
Had apes on an old Bonnie that I used for transportation, they were well over shoulder height, i hated them but they looked cool, my hands would go numb on long rides. Now My poor old bones won't reach that high any more without a cortisone shot. Guess its alright for the younguns
