Default Engine cut out on possible NT purchase

Apologize in advance for the double post but figured I might repost where it might be seen more as I haven't received a response yet. Looked at a 2000 Night Train for a possible purchase. When asked about any issues with the bike the owner told me that from time to time the engine will cut out while rolling down the road...said if he turns the kill switch off and on it will pick back up. He clarified that he has not had to pull over and use the starter to restart the bike.

I did notice in the paperwork with the bike that the RH switch had been replaced around 10k miles...bike currently has 20k on it. My search here points toward that switch mostly but need some more advice/encouragement that this won't turn into an expensive hunt for the problem. I'm pretty good on the mechanicals but not so on the electrics. Sense I plan to use this bike for some two up riding with my wife, I want to be sure this is not going to be a safety issue either or end up in the bike leaving us stranded somewhere.

Or there any other things that could possibly be causing this? RH switch I can deal with. BTW, what would the RH switch run? Is this a common issue?

Thanks and pardon the wordy post!

The switch near the right grip is a rocker type kill switch. It sounds like it was replaced at 10,000 mi. Apparently it either didn't fix it or it just went bad again. It doesn't actually "run" anything, but is another way to stop the engine, by interrupting the ground circuit. It may be a case of the ground wire running to or from the switch is damaged somewhere. I would say you can't trust it until that problem is eliminated.

You could have a faulty "bank angle sensor," which is a mercury type sensor that shuts your bike off if the lean angle becomes greater than 45 degrees. I had a problem several years ago where my bike would just shut down while riding down the road. When I turned the ignition off and then back on (or the kill switch) the bike would start up and allow me to ride it until it shut off again. Took to an indy shop who diagnosed the problem. Mine was located behind the engine and in front of the rear fender. Since this is a softail you are looking at, it is probably in the same location. Have the owner take it to the dealer or an indy to see if the sensor is faulty.

Thanks harleydavis for the heads up on the bank angle sensor. Hadn't thought of that. Had that as a recall item on a Honda ST1100 back in the day. oct1949...the bike is a 2000 model. Will it store codes? Owner has the service manual. Will it tell you how to check for codes? If so, I'll email him and tell him to give it a go.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the responses.

I'd say hold on to your money until the owner provides proof he's gotten the problem fixed. Lots of used bikes out there that don't have problems.

My bike did that a few times. Turning the ignition switch off & on, it would start right up. Until the last time it happened.

Turned out to be the stator.
