You do realize that non-DOT doesn't always mean that it doesn't comply with the appropriate standards right? It just means that it hasn't gone through the certification process. That could be for a number of reasons including, but not limited to, not meeting the standards. For instance, I know lots of aftermarket manufacturers that sell non-CARB items for cars that state that their items will pass CARB just fine. They just don't want to go through the hassle and expense of getting them passed. I can't vouch for DOT, but it's expensive to go through the CARB testing procedures, and if you make one little change, you have to go through it again. Which means a re-test and all new fees.
I purchased one of their helmets three years ago, when their name was "Skull Screamer Helmets". They were using Daytona Helmets and putting their 3D graphics on them. I got the acid wash one with the small skull on the back. I think the other ones are a bit flamboyant for me. The helmet in my Avatar is the helmet. I Photo Shopped the skull into a photo of me.
Saw the show. Interesting that they're making a 50% profit on the $175 helmet. Good for them. Nice concept with alot of possibilities to cross over into other disciplines that require helmets.
So this evening I am channel surfing as nothing is on, that I care to watch. When I hit ABC and see a motorcycle helmet being worn by a man in a suit. WTF? I say to myself. I saw this helmet in the back of AIM. Turns out the show is Shark Tank. A show apparently where business owners pitch their product to a panel of potential investors. In return the investor, of course, has a "stake" in the business.
The product is Hells Bells Helmets. Anyone who has read or subscribes to AIM has to have seen the ads for this product. The owner(s) claim they are going to make a profit in this million dollar industry with a 3-D graphic, non-DOT (some DOT), half helmet. They, the owners, netted a fish to buy into this company.
Question; Anyone here own one, or would you ever purchase one? I, honestly, do not think this product is something for me. I am curious about the masses here and what you think. As it was pitched as something that was going to corner the market on Motorcycle helmets.
I saw the whole show. The dude claimed they WERE D.OT. and that he had even added strength to them on top of the original strength. (perhaps he was referring only to a particular version, but he implied ALL helmets).
I found it hilarious when he 'choked' in the middle of his presentation,.... Simply forgot what to say next. LOL After a brief silence, the money men told him to stop being nervous, then the dudes wife took over the speech.
Was hilarious.
The big shots way overpaid for half the company, however they made it clear that they won't be into the manufacture of these helmets.
They will strictly be selling the license to other established manufacturers and making their money on the royalties. (The 3-D is patented for all sports helmets, from bicycles to ski helmets).
Good concept ... personally think I would get sick of wearing it after a few times and the novelty wore off.
I like the idea .. watched Shark Tank a few times, but would not buy one for that very reason. It is good that this company may make it, but do not care for the Shark investors from what I see of them on the show.
I still have my eye on the Candy Red ACC for the same price, and I would rather pay the price and wait for a helmet from ACC ... then feed the mouth of some Shark.
