I think for anyone who hasn't ridden side by side because they feel it is unsafe, no problem, you are the best judge of what you feel comfortable with so continue on. You are making an intelligent decision based on your comfort level.
Riding side by side is unsafe and foolish no matter what your skill level. You can't control other vehicles on the road, potholes or road debris won't move out of your way, and critters who decide to cross your path don't care what your skill level is. The bottom line is riding side by side limits your options. Where's you'd normally have the full with of the lane to deal with an emergency situation, riding side by side limits you to half that AND increases the risk the guy next to you will mistakenly decided to use the part of the lane you are in in dealing with his emergency situation.
I don't care if anyone else does it. It's a discussion forum. We're talking about it. I'm explaining my opinion.
Parade Style:
Police, Military, MC's run in Parade formation Not only for the safety...They "Plow" thru traffic, two head lights ahead is more noticeable, and for those following can maneuver better... Yes, They Can..They Take up LESS Space on the road by Not being Staggered Out in a Line or dragging behind... Cars Can Not even TRY to get in between if there are Four Riders...a CUBE is the Safest Travel. Also, because They Have The Skill. I find it very strange that so many guys here post that they DONT TRUST ANYONE who they ride with...Yet SO MANY have been in the Military where its drilled into you to TRUST 100% the Guy next to you on a Tank, Helicopter, Tie Lines, Ships, with Guns, explosives..etc etc... The Training SHOULD be the same... I Ride with my Brothers in a MC... I trust THEM 100%...Yes, The Cars around Us, I Do not trust at ALL...BUT, I Know how each guy will react if something happens. Riding Parade or Abreast is Safe and a Skilled Practiced Riding style... Because someone is scared and does not trust themselves or the guy they ride with, Thats NOT A reason to knock it...
Yes, I have ridden at 90 Miles a hour...and I had words with the Road Capt after the Ride... I find 70-75 a Safe Formation speed... For most highways. But, It was the SPeed of reaction time because of OTHER DRIVERS,,,, Not because I didnt trust my Brother Riders.

It has little to do with trusting those you ride with and everything to do with limiting your options. There is nothing more safe about eliminating options. Riding side by side is less safe than riding staggered, no matter how much you trust the rider beside you, no matter how skilled each rider is. You both now have less room to maneuver in an emergency.
If you want to do it, that's fine with me, but don't kid yourself into believing it's more safe. There are new riders on this forum who might be misled into believing such misinformation.
Ya gotta to be kidding, right?? my Buds and I used to ride so tight, I'd be beside him and put my leg on his lap at 70MPH, never thought nothing of it, God, I miss those times, it's called trust in your Bro', had some great rides, not done yet. Onwards, my friends!! cole

Why have words with the road captain? Remember, just because you're scared or don't trust the other guy you ride with, is no reason to knock it.

I agree that riding side by side limits your maneuver space to react to a situation. In school I was taught to use the entire lane (left, center, right) based on the situation. I don't think anyone, including a bike cop, can argue that riding side by side does not limit your space.
Ride safe Gents.
