At work, in the bike parking on the street.
Always in a designated parking spot.
Pisses me off when someone blocks the sidewalk with their bike and I have to go out into the street or squeeze past to get by. [:@] Even more so when one guy does it, then 3 more do it and there is no room to get a cart out of the store without hopping the curb. I can see doing it if there is no place to park, or it's a high risk area but not in general practice.
In San Francisco they now put nasty stickers on your bike that are real hard to get off explaining that it is illegal to park on the sidewalk.
if i park in a regular spot i park where my car's rear bumper would be so an inattentive driver doesn't think the spot is empty and dives into it and can't stop in time to not hit the bike. otherwise police have told me to park in the striped spots both yellow and blue. the bike is protected and if an emergency arises the police or firefighters can move it easier than a car.
Not dumb enough to park on the sidewalk so that little kids can climb on it, jealous people can mess with it because I found special parking and cops make an example out of me and leave the nice ticket.
I try to park where I can see the bike, and usually I always just park in a regular parking place. So far knock on wood. KNOCK KNOCK nothing has happened and of course keep the insurance paid up real real good.
i ordinarily dont ride to malls or places that i cannot see (or will be away from) the bike. im paranoid.
i do recall a few years ago, right before christmas... malls were CROWDED (as in NO parking) and i had to go to a Tiffany's for a gift so i figured id ride my gixxer to the mall (about a 40-50 minute ride) to avoid the parking head ache- even though it was like 30 degrees.
so, i parked on an 'out of the way' sidewalk- run in, get what i needed to get and come out to see my gix SURROUNDED by like 6 mall security guards on bicycles... lmfao!
these tools had more equipment than i wear at work... and they tried the 'sir youre not permitted to move the motorcycle... its being towed'
yeah- ok dude.... it came down to me having to badge them in order to avoid a physical confrontation.

At work, we have a spot for bikes and mine goes there. It's in the back where all the other parking is, but separated by it's own space. Most people know it's my ride, so I always get compliments. At other places I, park as close to the building as I can get in a parking area and makes sure I park diagonally with rear out towards the end so someone can always see it coming in. If it's a restaurant or somewhere else, I park it where i can see it.
