As far as texting/celling, my question has always been, "What do these people have to talk/message about?". I must be old or something, as I just don't get it.
I'm glad things worked out well. Hopefully, your son learned a lesson and will remember that when he is of age.
Here's one for you, I am in the parking lot of the local Harley shop in the lane along the back heading to the exit. This lady in a SUV is coming out of the parking spaces to pull into my lane, I figure she is going to come to a stop because I am right on top of her. Sure enough she dosent. I have to swerve hard right and she slams on breaks barely missing my rear tire. I stop the bike look back and she is looking at me with the "What's your F*ing problem" expression. Apparently I was supposed to stop and let her in because I am on a bike....
Sorry to hear about your close call. I'm sure your anger was more than doubled seeing as you had your young son with you. I'm glad he woke up and pulled back into his own lane!
thats why i always say everyone who applys for a car licences should be required to spend the first 6 months riding a bike before gettign there licence jus tso they have an idea of what we have to deal with and how dangerous it is for us when they text, do there hair, etc
I hear ya, but that'll only cover part of the problem. During school months, I drop my son off at school on the way to work. This morning, we're turning left onto a road that T's into the one we were on. Keep in mind that I drive a big-assed, bright red, crew cab Chevy Silverado...not 'zactly easy to miss. Before even really getting into the turn, the idiot waiting to pull outta that road, starts coming out...with my big red tank of a truck square in front of him. Luckily, he realized said red tank was directly in front of him, and came to a coffee-spilling jerk of a stop. I know this because we were so close I could see him cussing about the coffee he just spilled in his lap. This was all in a very slow moving type situation, so it was no mis-judging speed or anything like that...we were literally right in front of the idiot. I thought it was a done deal...bet ya couldn't have slipped a sideways nickel between us.
Oh yeah...glad things worked out like they did for the OP. I've had idiots get closer than I like with my son on the back of the bike...and, like someone else mentioned...your pissed-off meter tends to peg a bit more when said idiots put your kids at risk along with yourself.
First of all, glad to hear all is well with you and your son ! Now on to the issue of inatentive driving,we all know that in order for us to be safe we must not only watch what we are doing along with that we must also watch what the others on the road are doing and interpet in a second what we need to do for our own safety.
So many times I have heard the comment I did not see him and unfortunatley it is always after the accident. The situation will just keep getting worse with more vehicles on the road every year unless we can try to get legislation passed prohibiting the use of hands on communication devices while the vehicle is in motion.
It's good to hear you and your son are ok. Forrest Gump was just on the other day. It reminds me to shout out at that driver. Momma always said, "Stupid is , Stupid does.". There are organizations, ABATE, AMA and others fighting for our rights and safety. Some states have "distracted driving" laws. The punishment/fines at this point are mimimal just a slap in the face/hand. More effort and stronger enforement is needed.
Until then....We just need to be vigilant out there, use the SEE, (Search - Evaluate - Execute) and RIDE FORREST RIDE......
I don't know, but it seems to me some moms in their SUV or mini van have a routine when it comes to driving:
Close the door.....Check
Key in the switch.....Check
Cell phone glued to the ear.....Check
Start the car at the same time as your conversation...Check
Nevercomeback airlines wish you a nice day. Your pilot is busy talking and has had 3 chardonay, have a good flight.
Some people wont get it anyway.

Because they think world revolves around them.

Glad to hear you guys are ok after a close call. Reading threads like this sometimes makes me wonder what the hell do I think I'm doing riding a motorcycle with so many device-dependent overly distracted idiots on the road. And then the rain stops and the sun comes out and the weekend comes and I remember - just gotta ride.
Nice job avoiding that potential disaster, keep your head on a swivel and keep your options open.
