I couldn't agree with this more. As a general rule, people like to talk, especially if it's about themselves or something else they care about, so countering with a quick question is the way to go. Otherwise, a "thanks, appreciate it" removes any chance of unintentionally coming across as cocky/arrogant/dismissive etc... as might occur with just a lone "thanks".

Loved the response about the Rune with apparently no plastic on it, and it would probably blow away most any stock Harley, 'cept maybe a Rod.... and then the comment about all the plastic on 4 or 5 owned Harleys.

Just a "thanks" "I am in my own world when riding, take care" would do. I suppose I should understand getting all worked up about a guy riding around on one of those inferior stock motorcycles.

I usually say "Thanks, it's pretty old but I really like it" Then I look theirs over and say "I used to have one kinda like yours. It was a lot of fun." It's usually a younger dude (lately it seems like there are a lot of younger riders) and it leaves him with the impression that someday he'll have the bike of his dreams.
Actually it's not in my sig, but I still have that old 1983 V45 Magna sitting out in the garage. My wife says I have trouble letting go.

Damn, I'm still waiting for some one to compliment me on my bike! Maybe I gotta ride during the daytime instead of at 3AM?

You were smart....

To the OP.. My bike will likely always be stock. Haven't caught a bug to do much to the red mistress but ride it.But I would count myself as a very colorful character.

But like others have said you don't need to return a compliment. Say a true thank you. Say something about the weather.. Ask a question about where he is headed.. Or just say nice bike.

In that situation I would have just said thanks and maybe added something like it's sure a nice day to ride. I mean if you did not like his bike then you did not have to say anything about and that does not make you rude as long as you said thanks! I can not ride an all stock bike-even my Z1000 has some nice bolt on's and pipes.

I just would have said "Thanks" and rolled on..there are many reason why people ride what they do so you need to think about that.

Correct on the first part

SCARY on the second part NO duct tape should be needed.. Somewhere in between. If she is good looking you would presume she gets enough offers.. Actually mostly if you are female you get enough offers that you dont go around picking people up at lights EVEN if you only want a roll in the hay. Unless there is something else going on. Possible that isnt true and I am sure someone around here met thier OL tha way BUT is it worth the risk..
On the flip side most would say NSC stradgy is a bit extreme .. BUT we all know you have a ton of fun NSC ...
