hello people i tried this thread on the trans/primary spot but got only one reply so here goes. when i brake (like while slowing down at a stop sign) i get a clunk or a downshifting type noise from the bike. i read some older threads where some of the guys (mooncricket) was getting the same problem. any ideas? help would be much appreciate. oh and thanks to boomerbob
Are you sure its coming from the primary? If it is I guess I would start by trying some good synthetic oil you can use in the primary. Does this happen when your holding the clutch in or when your engine breaking too?
It appears that the noise is not induced while down shifting, but comes on it's own as you are slowing? Is this what you are saying? Or is your down shift louder than you expect to hear.
How many miles on the bike, what year and model? Could simply be the primary chain as mentioned. Does yours have an access door to get to the chain adjuster?
hi fellows. many thanks for your input, sorry for the lame explanation. the bike is a carbed 06 flst that has the inspection plate. i just adjusted the primary chain after first hearing this clunk. the bike has 15k on it. whenever i hit the breaks hard (and possibly over bumps) i hear this clunk.its the same sound as a downshift but seems to come from primary side.loose motor mounts, bad comp sprocket or?

I have this same problem on my 07 Street Bob. Seems to occur when braking over bumps. It never happened until I had my rear tire changed. The service was performed by an Indy. He has a great reputation and I've never had any other problem with his work.
You said you hear the noise when you go over bumps as well? Did you check to see if it's the suspension? The swing arm gets awful damn messy down there on softails, you know right near the ground...near the dirt. Not saying this is it, I had a mystery noise on my Fatty and it turned out to be the swing arm being dirty.
