Yep, it was a nice paint job at one time! I'm not an expert, but I have done some body work on autos. (Actually got fired once for taking too much time to get the job perfect!). With an intricate paint scheme like that I'd have to say a repaint would be in order. Most of the dents look to have creases in them, so I kinda doubt the paintless dent removal tricks would work, hopefully some one more experienced will chime in. And no your question wasn't ignorant, you were just hoping for a better answer.
