Default ACC Helmets

Have read several threads about these helmets. One caught my attention when it linked to another website that said the non-DOT helmets made by ACC passed all the DOT tests except the "spear" test. I contacted ACC to ask them and this is the response I got:

That is a question that is asked quite often. The only difference between our DOT and Non-Dot is the fact that the Non-Dot will not pass the penetration test. The test consists of a seven-pound spear dropped from approx. ten feet onto the helmet that is resting on a head form. This head-form has a very thin layer of wax on the surface. The spear is dropped and the tip cannot mark the head form. It is a very black and white test. Mark it fail, don’t mark it, pass. Both helmets pass the rest of the structural DOT tests. The liners on the two helmets are different , the DOT having a 5/8” thick urethane one and the Non-Dot having the ½” of Ensolite energy absorbing foam. The shells are the same except for shape and size, they are manufactured using the same materials and process.

Thanks for the interest

Just some more info if you are having trouble deciding DOT or non, or maybe you were planning on non-DOT and want something better than just a plastic shell. Sounds like the non-DOT offers almost the same amount of protection the DOT does. Don't know how often people get speared in the head. I haven't seen this info in any of the other posts, sorry if it's a repeat.

Like someone else wrote on an earlier thread, "If you're going to get speared in the head, it's your time to go anyway."

I noticed that statement on the other web site back before I ordered my first helmet from ACC. When I was on the phone making my order I asked about that also. She told me that the non DOT helmets only failed the spear test by less than a 16th of an inch. I've cracked my head on a cabinet or table corner and had a hole in my head deeper than that before.

I'm cracking up just reading this thread. "A spear test?" When was this standard set--for stagecoach drivers back in the 1800s driving across Souix and Cheyenne country? I'm still laughing as I write this.
"Sorry officer, but the only reason this helmet isn't DOT certified is because it didn't survive being hit by a spear."
"That's too bad, son. I still have to cite you. We get a lot of spear attacks on this stretch of I-5. Why, just last week, ole Jim got knocked clean off his bike by a spear."
I know it's a penetration test, but calling it a spear test is a little misleading. People who don't ride bikes and have never heard of this would just nod and say, "yup. Always suspected them bikers to be a bit crazy. Now they think they have to guard against being hit by spears."
