Really depends on the look your going for. Chains are nice, if yer going for that tough guy biker look, ie: chain from wallet to pants loop. The belt is great cuz it can be used from everything from church gatherings to hardcore biker events, kinda more universal. I hope this helps...lol
before retiring I don't remember ever putting over 15k on any bike I owned and 6 had chains and 3 where shaft drives.
I liked the shafts better than chains. less adjustments, and cost, plus I ruined several coats after oiling the chains..
Shafts were fine, never had any problem with them.
Now with the Harley its the first bike with a belt and its been fine for 25k, zero problems and no issues..
I prefer either of those over the chain... Just me...
