Overall I have had great experiences and help galore on here. I see some keyboard commandos chime in that irk me, a few others are going to argue it seems just because.
I too have a sarcastic sense of humor and it has been taken wrong a time or two. I always come back trying to clarify I was not trying to flame anyone.
OP I understand your frustration but tend to disagree on one point. I read a lot of guys trying to define themselves as a "real" biker (miles, old bike, never drink the HD kool-aid, etc) and hand poser status to anyone else.
Always been the type to say I don't care what you ride, how often, what you wear, etc. Just riding what you got is what it's all about......
21 replys and of those 2 of them were tongue in cheek answers, so where's is the problem? I didn't see anyone ragging on the guy or saying anything bad to him. I was one of those tongue in cheeks answers, although mine was more of a thread hijack in response to someone else's post. And it didn't seem to me that his post was attacking the guy, more like ribbing the forum itself. We used to have a sense of hunmor in here but now it seems that the only thing you can post in the main forum is bitching about something or bitching about someone bitching about something or just plain ole fighting.
And ya the older guys always expected to be asked. They also good ripped on the young guys in fun and joshed with them, the same as when you are an apprentice in a trade. Now it seems like if anyone cracks a joke it has to stop because it could possibly offend somebody.
People need to grow thicker skin IMO.
Cut the new guys some slack and why not if you post a smart *** reply, follow it up with something helpful. Frankly, I haven't noticed much of a loss of a sense of humor. Just the usual dust ups. Mostly we've got some pretty damn funny online outlaws on here. Just remember everyone has to start somewhere and help a brother out. But yeah, if you're going to hang here, a thick skin is pretty mandatory.
With members from 20-70 in here, some rich and some living paycheck to paycheck. Education from didn't graduate from high school to PHD's, some just labors, some unionized, and then some management. From all over the country.
With all these different people coming to one forum, I am not surprised to see some of the post.
Tone, especially sarcasm, is difficult to convey on a forum. I've been burned before, too. It's all good! Ride on!
i agree with this statement, i can be a bit that way and have a chuckle, some people get it,and certain people on here are uptight and dont!!
some think there really bad ***,and others think if your not a journalist your not good enough to type a sentence!
i agree with your post,i can be a sarcastic ***** at times, which doesnt help when someone is after genuine info!but i have been helpful too!!
some of the joking and harmless banter are the best thing about this forum at times,so i enjoy that side of it,

I just ignore the ones I don't like...
+1 on this and
+1 on the OP.
For me, i look back at some of the post I have made and thought, damn, i bet that was taken wrong. Sometimes im not the greatest at making these black little block letters translate the tone that i truly meant. Guess i havent mastered that yet. Dont know if i ever will. But, you do get a lot of new riders that are very eager, very excited, and their first post my seem whining, poserish, trollish, or whatever you want to call it, and some of the responses i have seem, are rather crass, to include my own. But yeah, the funny is always awesome, as long as its understood. Like GG said, i try and make a smart *** comment, with some little gay icon to show im joking, then a helpful comment to show im sincere. Seems to work out ok. As far as i know nobody on here has put me on some secret little hit list because i insulted them, well except maybe vroony.
I know I'm going to get flamed for this one but I got to let it fly. I've been on this site for five years and it has really changed lately. I just read a post were a new rider was asking what kind of protective gear to wear in the summer because evidently he didin't know. He or she should have gotten a response pertaining to the question but got a what kind of fashion statment are you trying to make response and no real answer. Now I know that some of the questions and post get old but there are a lot of new riders that don't know and are trying to get legitimate answers. And when did we start ragging on another rider because he is riding a home made bike he wrenched and put together on his own or bought a Sportster or Dyna. Yea I know they're not the most expensive bikes in the line up but that is what a lot of people can afford and damned if I'm going to flame someone because there bike isn't an Ultra, plus a lot of folks enjoy a stripped down bike (me for instance). I know I'm not the ultimate biker and don't claim to be but it use to be you rode what you could you took care of your own and didn't burn your fellow bikers because they weren't setting on a 30K bike or ask a question pertaining to the life style they were trying to enjoy and understand. That's what the older bikers expected (to be ask questions and teach the ways). I guess the 70's are a long time past but we sure could use a revival of those times. Like I said I know this post will **** a lot of you off but hey sometimes you got to get it off your chest.
for the most part, I agree.
If you've come here to learn to certain things, you won't find any answers unless you befriend some people that will guide you in the right direction. I've been lucky in making the friends I have, and they (you know who you are) have been a great help on some topics.
You have to keep in mind though, this forum does not represent a true cross section of Harley owners.
When I was a moderator, it used to make me pull my hair out at some of the things I would read in here. Terry reminded me often that you have to take most of this with a grain of salt.
I do very much like viceman's idea of an old school section.
