The wife and I are planning to move to Florida in the next 2-5 years depending on how long it takes to sell some of our real estate holdings up here. Her folks live in Ocala, my Sister lives in Tampa and we have 3 friends in Naples/Fort Myers area. I have been thinking looking somewhere between Ft. Myers and Marco Island and was wondering how the riding is? I am used to Ohio riding where there are literally hundreds of rural back roads that will take you pretty much anywhere. How is riding in Florida? I would also consider the Jupiter and North on the East Coast as well. Anything I should beware of?
I don't live there but I go every year for a week. I've bben to the everglades and always see bikes everywhere. I also talked to a bunch of people that said the keys is a good run. Also There is a cool bike night in Fort Myers every other month I think. I'm thinking about shipping my bike down next year. Riding through the everglades would be really cool though.
I live in Jacksonville, there are some great areas to ride but we as a state have a higher rate of MC accidents and deaths than most states. They repealed the helmet law a few years back and deaths promptly doubled. On the coast the riding is gorgeous but if you aren't used to riding in high winds then it will take some adjusting.
I reside in Miami and although we don't have the twisty's and everything's relatively flat, you can't beat the 12 month riding and well-maintained road surfaces. Some may complain of traffic or quality of drivers; its no worse than any other urban area.
Being only 25 minutes from Key Largo, I often ride down just to eat lunch under the Tiki huts with the pelicans and manatees. 40 MPH thru the Keys makes it pleasant too.
US 41 is scenic; loads of alligators and birds within their natural habitat, though this is rough in the summer months with mosquitos.
Also, plenty of organized bike runs to keep you busy.
Ridin down here is great...lotsa good rides....A1A....keys...glades...coast all around...might wanna get a quick detach windshield or a face shield...sometimes the fiying critters can be a pita...
