I hate those another biker down threads but have to offer this just in case it may save a life.
We had a festival in town the weekend and a bike show at the Harley dealership that brought a lot of bikers to town. About 4:30 PM Friday a guy with his wife on the back of his Electra was rear ended at a stop light. He was hit very hard and his wife was thrown like a rag doll off the bike, the man had some serious road rash and I have not to date found out about the condition of his wife.
It seems the guy in the car that hit them was texting! I only offer this because this is about the third instance in a very small town and rural area where we have had bikers killed or injured by people running into them from behind at lights.
I always am constantly checking my rear view mirrors but in fact don't know if it will do any good if there is not enough room to get away in the intersection. Cages with cell phones and texting, there oughta be more stringent laws for this. They are taking their toll on bikers!
When I first read the thread title I thought you got rearended, glad it wasn't you.
Last Friday I was on my way to Lowes on a two lane road. All of a sudden the minivan in front of me heads for the ditch. In the time it took me to get my eyes back on the road I see this company van headed right for me totally on my side of a dbl yellow line. I could see the guys head clearly and it looked like he saw where he was going. I narrowly missed him as I got off the edge of the road. He continued to be in my lane as he headed for the light about 8 car lengths in back of me. At the last minute he pulled into his lane and stopped at the light. I think he must have had his device on the steering wheel and never knew he crossed the line. Either that or he is one dumb sob.

this is why I would rather be moving, and timing the lights.
you may flame me for this.....
I have been riding well over 20 years in NY City, and I have found that it is beneficial to be moving, and observing. While moving, and observing I retain the ability to dodge the problematic drivers. I allow traffic to stack at a light first, and yes, often move to the front after the stack occurs. It has served me well.
sad to hear of the hit from behind, as well as the many other slow speed accidents that were preventable.
the meth induced, multi death, truck slaughter of late comes to mind. that sh1tstick should be charged with a minimum of manslaughter, and many counts of it. i would love to see a murder conviction, but a slight knowledge of law... i realize they won't get that conviction. he should live the rest of his life in prison, and "get hit from behind" every day of it.

Wow......hit 4 times. That's why I always keep my bike in 1st gear and my eyes on my rear view mirrors!
Plus 1 on this with an excape route planned at every stop. Planning on getting a BAL 2 light system as soon as I can squeeze it into my tight a$$ budget.

I have recently taken up a new practice at stops. I come to a stop at an angle which allows me better viewing behind me, and it positions my bike where If I have to escape a rear end collision I am already poised to pop the clutch and go strait ahead as opposed to steering away from the car in front of me.
Yes I too have been rear ended, hit two cars and have been hit by two other cars besides the rear end collision. Call me paranoid! Lol

Bought me one of those and getting rearended after stopping for an ambulance was a big factor.
