I go for the quart option... Unlike the motor oil tank which can dump excess oil into the breather, your primary is all sealed and the few extra ounces shouldn't cause any troubles.
I just changed the primary oil myself for the first time last weekend in my '03 Softail Standard. I ended up putting more than 26oz in. Even using a flashlight 26oz wasn't getting it to where I could see it. The bike was on a lift, so couldn't really tilt it one way or the other though.
The problem may be he's six ounces short. Mine says 32oz. Now maybe the softails are different, but, there is a big difference between 26oz. & a quart.
I dump mine then I put in a whole quart, but, I don't let every last drop out of the bottle.
I figure there's probably close to an ounce in the bike coating everything so no use overfilling.
Edmo, the manual says over filling WILL cause problems with engaging, disengaging and finding neutral, if my memory serves me.
Hard to see down there with my glasses so I used a clean cardboard strip and dip it until I see oil on the cardboard. I pre-mark the cardboard for depth.
Guys.......measure the oil amount required by your service manual buy a small funnel and a piece of plastic tubing that will fit into the primary and pour the oil in. If the drain bolt is in where else can it go? I have a small funnel that I cut the tip on so it fits into the primary case...my bike takes 1 quart......easy peasy........

Now this is a great idea
