If you need to be told how to change fork oil I would suggest buying an HD repair manual for your bike, its a great investment for a DIY guy.

Thanks, Pro... I have the factory manual and Clymers (or maybe it's Chiltons). I always try to gather as much info as possible before probing into the "unknown". Sometimes you can find a little hint here and there that will make life so much easier!

Default RE: Fork Oil Change Tutorial???

I just went through this on my Dyna. The book isn't very specific, so here's what I ended up doing.

1. Remove bars and place on tank (with a towel underneath of course!)
2. Remove fork caps with 1 3/8 socket on 3/4 drive palm ratchet. Be sure to hold onto that cap, the fork springs will launch them.
3. Remove drain plugs from bottom of forks and let drain.
4. Remove fork springs.
5. Use a sharpie to put index marks on forks and caps so that the threads line up properly.
6. Replace springs and plugs; pour in new fluid.
7. Using brute strength, compress fork spring with fork cap in socket on ratchet. With indeex marks aligned, reinstall fork caps.
8. Reinstall bars.

Hope that helps. Pulling the bars made life a lot easier for me, and I had a buddy hold the forks while I loosened and tightened the caps.

Pretty straight forward, jack up front of back, drain oil through drain plugs, remove fork caps and replace oil. Two tools that will help, one that makes it easy to get caps back on by lowering tubes between trees, compresses cap down so you can thread back on easy, then raise up tubes. Even easier, Dennis Kirk has a tool that lets you pump the oil in through the drain plugs, don't have to remove tube caps.

Thanks all!!!

That Dennis Kirk tool looks like anybody syringe! I think I can fab one from an ink cartridge refill kit and a bit of hose with a cone tip!

Fantastic!!! Now, for what may be a dumb question...., If I put the oil in from the bottom, how does the excess air in the shock get released?
