Sometimes the "oh ****" look on their faces can be somewhat entertaining tho

I don't have to do a thing but keep the bike upright. Now, my wife on the back gets really riled up and salutes, sometimes with both hands and she talks to them. They generally get what she is trying to communicate to them.

I think it's the sheepish "I'm sorry" wave. I would much rather they do that than nothing at all. At least if they give you the apologetic wave they know they f'd up and acknowledge that fact. Hopefully they learned something from the situation and will look more diligently in the future.

Agreed. We have all screwed the pooch while driving. Hopefully everyone goes home afterward.
