As already mentioned, develop a good sense of balance and learn to slow and stop, putting only your left foot down. I'm only 5'10" tall and been doing it that way for many years. All of the MSF rider/safety courses I've attented, recommend that you do it that way.
I need to have my right foot down when I'm stopped because I can't shift unless my left foot is on the board and my balance isn't good enough to stay upright without at least one foot on the ground!
The pipes on both my bikes get REALLY REALLY HOT! My daughter climbed on my softie after I'd been highway riding for a couple hours and melted the soles of her cheap plastic-soled boots all over my V&H 2-1. I've also burned myself enough times that I've learned to be careful around hot pipes. Many synthetic materials will melt if they come in contact with hot pipes.
I've never had my pants catch fire though. I've only ever worn jeans when riding.

Ha, that's a neat piece of leather. But I've not had any problems/discomfort up there. It's down closer to my calf/ankle area where the pants lay on the pipe.
