I learned a lot while on a trip to the outer banks, blueridge parkway, and smokeys. The biggest thing I learned is I love to travel on a motorcycle.
It was our first trip longer than a weekend. We were packed to the gills two-up, and all of our camping gear.
The motorcycle was great to travel on because my wife could take pictures from both sides of the bike, without having to stop, or bother my driving, which we would have had to have done with the car. The harley ventilator or whatever you call it seat pad, is great.
We left DSM on Thursday night at 6:00 and made it to Galesburg IL later that night. We did 750 miles the next day to some truck stop town in WV. we then did another 300 miles to the outer banks on saturday before memorial day. I was really surprised with how much we were able to drive. Reading on here I had figured that 500 miles would be our limit but had we not gotten messed up in Indianapolis 500 traffic we would have been able to put on a bunch more miles.
The only problem with motorcycle touring is that you have to put up with a little more **** than if you were in a car. We camped at the KOA in the outer banks, and the 20 somethings partied well past 3:00 which really made the rest of the days a little longer. Had I been in a place where they couldn't dick with my things as easier I would have said something but I was unable to as we left our tent there during the day and the bike was an easy target for people to mess with.
Overall, the trip was great, 3500 miles door to door, and I am already looking forward to the next trip. I would highly suggest to anyone that has yet to take a long trip on a bike to go, I have traveled to 49 states by almost every means possible and by bike is my favorite, nothing quite like it.
Great tale........if the family ever quits using us as a Bed & Breakfast since moving to AZ maybe we can add a story of our own. Sorry my former hometown hit you with the 500 traffic.
That is awesome man!! I know we rode 420 miles the Friday before Memorial day, what a great day trip! We are planning to ride from GA to PA, then down to Chincoteague Island, VA....should be a pretty decent 2 week trip!
I agree whole heartedly on everything you said! Wow 750 miles 2-up! Gotta love understanding wives. Mine is too.
So the ventilator seat pad works good? Torn between that, sheepskin, or rideshields for an upcoming out west trip?
Sounds like you saw some beautiful country. Pics would be nice....
Sounds like a good trip to me. I'm only a day tripper, but maybe at some point I will take a long bike trip?
Once you move over to a cruiser/tourer you'll see what you're missing!
All bikes have their merits - cruiser/tourer's just make high mileage traveling fun.
Of course your Kawi makes speed fun!
