Maybe it was just your unlucky day. If I stop to check my map, make a phone call, drink some water or rest my butt, it seems like many will slow or stop to see if I need help. Not every rider, but most. I still think most riders feel that sense of brotherhood and will stop to help. Doesn't seem to matter what they are riding either.
almost every freakin time i stop for a motorcyclist who i THINK is broken down- theyre usually ON THE DAMN PHONE! [:@]
Yeah... I see that a lot too... Not sure why they cannot ride the extra 50 yards to get off at the exit and talk on the jabber box.
Honestly though... You never know WHAT you are gonna find when you stop on the side of the road these days. I don't know if it is a sign that bikers have changed or just that the world has changed. My basic rule is to make it home alive. So many retards out there these days it makes it hard to stick to my rule.
I am not saying that you were going to rape/murder/etc the person... but honestly... How do they know that? Just because you have a Harley does not mean you are not a killer. And on the flip side it does not mean you are. But how does the average person know? Hell... someone just posted on here the other day about a serial rappist driving around impersonating a cop. If you see the lights your first instinct is to pull over like you were taught, correct? Back in the day no one would have been stupid enough to pull that stunt.
The world went and changed on us. My wife constantly gives me grief because she says I am too suspicious of everyone. You know, it sucks... but I am still here to complain. It would be fantastic if we could expect that everyone is going to be good... but unfortunately... the world has gone to hell in a hand basket and this is what we have left.
That all being said... there have been times I have stopped for other riders and times I have not. All depends on what else is going on. That doesn't make me a scumbag non-biker (at least in my opinion) it just means I am going to make sure I get home and get a hug from my little girl.
I will usually stop, even when I'm in the truck, I even stopped when I didn't have a bike and wasn't riding. At least when I'm in the truck I have ALOT more tools than when on the bike. It sure is a comfort when you're down on the side of the road to at least suspect that you may get some help.
As far as whether or not it may be a bad guy you're helping or stops for you, that's what the Colt is for. - - Or torque wrench, tire iron, spare chain, etc. You can't let the fact that there are crazies out there lessen your humanity, otherwise you are one step closer to being them.
I ride a Harley Davidson, I wear authentic HD clothing and protective gear, buy HD parts, but I'm not a "biker". That being said, I waive to others and would have stopped for you or any other rider on a HD, metric cruiser or a rocket. The world has changed, it's all about image. Don't have to be a "biker" to help someone out. I'm a returning rider after 20 years, bought the HD I always wanted and try my damdest to help the average citizen get rid of their "stereotypical' view of anyone on a HD wearing black leather!

Engraved Rebellion: Inside Bundnerbike's Glam Rock II
I recently stopped on the highway for a BMW sportbike that had blown out it's rear tire. He had already called for a tow, but thanked me for stopping to help. We chatted for about 10 minutes until his ride got there. Just last week, I was stopped along side the road (but well off the roadway) using my cell phone to return a call that I had been waiting on. A guy on a Harley pulled up beside me to see if I needed any assistance. I explained that I was ok, just had to make a call real quick, but told him I appreciated it. I stop for any motorcycle, and have never had to sit for very long when my bike has had an issue, without someone - on a bike or in a car/truck pulled over to see if I needed anything. I do pull over occasionally to read the map or make a call. Usually I will have several people slow down and wait on the "all good" sign, or sometimes even stop to chat anyway. I think we're still okay. Hope your experience was isolated.......
