Okay, here is my problem. I went to start my 2 year old FXD this afternoon after it sat for about a week (rain and more raiin). The only thing that happened when I hit the starter was a high pitched whine from the starter. It sounded like it was spinning, but not catching and turning the motor over.
I made sure that the 2-year old battery is fully charged and no "clicking" sound like when the battery is just powering the soleniod and the starter won't turn over. No loose or corroded wires, it's turning over but not engaging the motor to turn it over.
What's the next thing to check? Solenoid going bad? I doubt it is the starter, this always turned over just fine. Can a solenoid crap after a little over 2 years? Any help would be appreciated.
You can get a replacement @ the dealership for ~$80 + a primary gasket + qt of oil for primary. It's a good idea to go ahead and get the little locking washer for the drive nut so you can put a new one back on it....
Not too hard a fix. Probably 2 hrs on the 1st time...
sounds like the starter bendix drive is bad. that's the part of the starter that engages with (at least in a car) the flywheel. not having had a harley starter in my hands i can't say if it is servicable separately or if it is only available with the starter.
Looking at the exploded starter diagram in the service manual, that's where I was going. Now to find that extended warranty to see what, if anything is covered.
