Have never washed a bike with soap and water. Just spray the engine and wheels down with S100 and hose off...spritz the rest of the bike while I'm at it and dry it off. The tins never get "dirty," only dusty. Only hose wash the bike once or twice a year. Normally clean the tins, chrome, windshield and mirrors by hand piece by piece with one damp cloth and one dry one.

You must not ride in the rain...ever. My bike gets completely filthy with road grime when ridden in rain.

You are right, I do try to avoid it, but that is not always possible. Rode in the rain yesterday for a bit on a little 300 mile trip around Lake Winnebago.
Just don't use a pressure washer. I see guys cleaning thier bikes in car washes, not a good idea. You will get water in places it shouldn't be! You guys that don't wash your bikes must live some where there aren't bugs and it doesn't rain. I would like to know where that is???
bucket of water, a wash cloth, and a nice soft towel is all I've used for years
If this is what you are doing... then you need to either change the water or the soap or maybe not rub so hard. Look at how much your bike has changed!!
