He actually may have been trying to put the deer out of it's misery with his gun and it got up on him or something like that deer are tough, seen em run over and get right up or just be dazed and get up, stranger things have happened.

I like the "tried to put deer out it's misery" scenario. The way it plays out for me is that, while he was standing over the injured animal, became squeamish about the kill shot, flinched, missed, and took a ricochet off the pavement right into the noggin.

Maybe the guy was in the process of inventing a new sport which he preliminarily called "drive-by hunting". Attempted to shoot the deer but lost control and went down with gun in hand. The impact caused him to pull the trigger whence shooting himself in the head.
