Don't get it myself. So you can ride 1000 miles in a day and you get a patch. I did 1200 miles in a day once coming back from Nova Scotia. Wasn't trying to do an iron butt, just trying to get home.
Other than being tired and almost getting killed a few times it wasn't that big of a deal.
I've been invited to a couple iron butts since then and I say thanks but no thanks.
With today's herd mentality that seems to be the norm people have forgotten or were not around when owning and riding a motorcycle of any kind was about personal CHOICE . Iron Butt isn't for everybody most I've talked to who have done or want to try it said plainly it was the personal challenge of just doing something like that . Too many people try to push their views and beliefs on others now days , I think the world and it's challenges tend to scare that type . Myself I admirer any who set's a goal that challenging and gets busy , what they ride or don't , where they come , race , whatever doesn't matter that is an individual I can relate to .
I think it is an exercise in poor judgement. Professionals are not allowed to drive for that amount of time for a reason. However with that being said, what I think or say is not the rule of law.
I completed a couple 1000-mile days over the years. It was fun in that it proved that I could do it. What's dumb to me is doing it on someone else's terms like the IBA just to get a patch.
It doesn't sound like much fun to me. With that said, my uncle and I are planning a run to Sturgis next summer that will involve a 1000 mile day, running hard and fast. From my house to Kansas City, MO is right at 1011 miles. We plan to leave around 3AM. Next day will be about 750 miles into Sturgis. We'll take three or four days coming back.
Dude what route taking sounds way off to me . Did Stugis 7 times outa KC don't remember it being that unless I hit Denver first and that wandering around some . Ditch Google maps and get a good old Rand McNally ...
Ever hear the phrase " stop and smell the roses " ? at that pace you never even see the damn things . Stugis is a 2-3 day max and your bored or broke by then thing , lots of God's country all around go see it .
Everyone here seems to be referring only to the Iron Butt Saddle Sore 1000. The Iron Butt organization is much more than just one ride....it's a series of long distance rides,
shown here,
http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/ plus the Iron Butt Rallye, which has a waiting list to get into and a drawing for riders besides. 11,000 miles in 11 days? Not for me. But a SS1000 was easy to accomplish.
To me it is fun but it all depends on your limit. The 1,000 milers I have done were fun and a challenge at first but now they are pretty easy with decent planning.
The 2,000 mile one we did hit my limit and I am glad I did it but will never attempt that one again. It was definately a challenge and we barely finished it. Too hard with a lot of people in the group.
I am planning on trying to do another 1,000 miler next year. Glad I have some others in our group that find them fun and challenging.
These rides are not for everyone but if they were it wouldn't be as challenging or fun.
Did I say challenging and fun enough times?

the most i have ever done was 650, but it took me 15 hours to do it cause i did 2 laners and got caught in rain and winds and storms.
did 600 coming home from sturgis. and that only took me 10 hrs and i stopped twice for gas and ate during one of those. didn't really hurry or anything.
but i do know that the diff from 600 and 1000 can be huge.
but do the right roads and averaging 65-70 is not difficult. and it leaves time for napping and such.
i enjoy riding, down the slap at speed, or on the 2 lane backroads - i enjoy riding.
so this just might be another reason to ride (like do i really need a 'reason')
