After 32 year of riding i went down hard at 70mph. It took two months to recover and the first thing I did was go out and buy another bike. Got right back to riding everyday though I had my share of nervous moments. It's been over a year now and I am back to my old self. I think it actually made me a better rider. Im a lot more alert to hazards now.
I was clipped by a dually in 2000. Tib/fib compound fracture. Was riding again 9 weeks later.
Got in pretty much a head-on on '07. Busted a bunch of stuff & lost an arm. It's been a long time coming, but my new ride will be ready when I go to Florida for Xmas.
Getting back on is a bit scarey at first, but you DO get better! As previously posted, transfer the fear to awareness. It'll come...Just takes time!

to the op: i have never been in your situation, so i can't really add anything other than it sounds like some of these folks have some good advice for you. good luck to you and your wife.
During Bike Week my wife and I were rear ended and she got ran over by the truck. Six months later she had 3 surgeries and I have 2 herniated disk in my back, but we are doing better.
THANK YOU for that ! MMy little headache seems so much smaller now that I've been humiliated. I got rear-ended 6 weeks ago and I'm whining because I'm not recovering as fast as I want, and you reminded me how lucky I am that I wasn't hurt worse than I was. Thanks AGAIN, and God Bless you two.
And yeah, I'm interested in this thread too. I can barely drive and my broke bike isn't here. I need to get back on the horse.

I like the 'Transfer the fear into awareness'. Part of my problem is I never saw the guy coming that hit me. And it kinda pisses me off. I'd at least like to know if his headlights were on....
never really dawned on me about being rear ended. I`m always riding defensively but never thought about the rear end.
From researching mc accident fatalities nationally, and state wide (Florida) Its reported that 4%-5% of all mc fatalties are the results of being rear ended.
This is an excellent argument why it should be legal for mc to filter or lane split at traffic lights when stopped in heavy traffic.

For what it's worth anybody who has been involved with your kind of trauma my self included goes through the same feelings some of us work it out and keep riding some don't , it's a choice no one but that person can understand or make . Any body talks about a wreck jumping on again and riding care free like it didn't happen is bullsh*ting that's ego talking . As the man in the first reply said it takes time and then some more time . What it will do is make you a better rider for a number of reasons . Best of luck to you both and rooting for you and the wife's full recovery .
PS ; If it doesn't feel right anymore don't do it , your lives your choice . Come back later . I parked mine for a year still can't say why just didn't feel right , my head just wasn't in the game .
I want to thank everybody for the encouraging replies. When I rebuilt the bike after the wreck I did install a Kuraykin Panacea system. It is much brighter than the Harley LED and it does strobe flash when I stop. I do ride with my Dad and brother on Sunday mornings when alot of people are in bed or at church. I will work through it and I cant wait to show my wife all of your encouraging words, Thank you all and we should all hook up at Biketoberfest!
My only problem is when I'm riding I feel like there is a target on my *** and every one is aiming for it.
Believe me - there IS a target on all of our asses and lots of drivers are aiming for it!. Always ride with that thought. Staying alert can reduce your risks, but there is no guarantee you will not be run down by some moron. For me - it is a risk I am willing to take. Nobody else can make the decision for you though. Only you and your wife can determine if riding is worth the risk.

Because people behave differently if they think a cop is in front of them ? They don't break the law. Ahh. Can't have that.
If he had a concern about anywhere else (in the front or the side), I could maybe THINK of a reason why the cops wouldn't like it. But on the REAR of the motorcycle ? That makes no sense that I can think of. Why would the cop want you to NOT maximize a safety feature that is going to have zero impact on his business ?

Everyone handles it their own way. I have known at least two guys that quit riding after small crashs. I, myself have had a few wrecks (see one of my other posts) and will have to be killed or disabled to get me to stop riding. I have been able to shine it on about wrecking, though getting back on can make me nervous at first. There have been a couple of real close calls where I just kept on my way. Some will stop and have a smoke or just let their nerves calm. I once had to skid to avoid a crash and the girl on the back wasn't paying attention, (she was waving to be seen) got tossed off the back. She called my name and it faded so I knew she was gone. I made her get back on the bike to take her home and so she would not be afraid to ride. She never did learn to sit without trying to be noticed. But she did ride.
So, just ease back into the groove don't push her or you and you will get over it. And you'll always be looking for the idiots that know how to drive.
