Default how many miles are tolerable

1987 flht. If you are looking at a bike with 102K miles. The evo seems to run good. How much would you trust an engine with that many miles? Looking good, would you think it is worth $4k?

Miles dont scare me, Maintenance & up keep are what I look for. Do a compression test to see how good the rings are. Throttle wide open! Check swing arm bushings & drive belt for wear. Front & rear drive sprockets.
Get an idea of the service history of the bike. Most likely, the heads should have been done by this point. I would have installed new rings.
Which carb is on it? Keihn is factory & I dont like them. Mckuni or a CV-40 would be a step up!
Check under the bike for rot in the frame.
Gamble $50 & have a good mechanic look it over!
I would pay $4000 here in Canada! I like the older bullet proof Evo's!
Hatch.

Thanks for your thoughts. I will have to check on the carb. This is a one-owner and I will have to inquire about rings, heads, etc.

4K for 102 miles seems a bit expensive to me - hope it`s pristine.

Kelly's lists $6k. Also, they list an avergae of 4,400 miles per year for larger touring bikes - that works out to over 101k so I don't think the mileage is absurd.

You might want to check the NADA price, they seem to run lower than KBB.

102K miles & a good running evo tend to indicate a well built & well maintained machine.
The price seems good.

Why would you even consider buying a bike whose trouble-free miles are completely used up? And 24 years old! 100,000 miles on a bike is perhaps equal to several hundred thousand miles on a car. I would RUN away from a deal like this!

If the price is right you could sink a few bucks into it even a motor if needed and still have a better bike cheaper than one off the show room.

I sold my last bike at 138,000 miles and iit ran great, this bike "only" has 63,000 miles on it...
My biggest worry about a bike with 100k on the clock... isn't the engine, or transmission

Clutch
Stator
every cable
every bushing
axel bearings
"wear items"

I wouldn't run away from a 24 year old EVO... but I'd be trying to "talk down" the price.
