Actually, modifying any element of your motorcycle emission system, and yes that includes changing your original mufflers, is illegal under the Federal EPA Clean Air Act and has been for years, unless the replacement muffles are EPA approved for that bike (they must be stamped to prove they are legal). Note that most of HD aftermarket mufflers (and others) usually are stamped "for off road use only". They just haven't enforced the law as most states don't smog check or inspect motorcycles for compliance with the EPA law. Same applies to motor vehicles. This has been discussed and cussed for years on the various motorcycle forums.
BTW, here is California's current noise law for motorcycles:
Maximum allowable A-weighted sound levels based on measurements taken at a distance of 50 ft from center lane of travel:1)Pre-1970..92dba; 2) After 1969, and before 1973...88dba; 3) After 1972, and before 1975...86dba; 4) After 1974, and before 1986...83dba; 5) After 1985...80dba (27201-27202. Motorcycle Limits). http://home.ama-cycle.org/amaccess/l...t.asp?state=ca
Sorry all you Limbugs, this has nothing to do with so-called Libs or the Braindead on the other side, but a whole lot to do with morons running way-too-loud pipes through the neighborhoods farting their motors with their right wrists.
I hear bikes that are stupid loud, obnoxiously loud, idiot loud. Not everyone wants their breakfast interrupted by some lardass blamming his motor up and down the street. I saw two guys gunning their motors Sunday morning as they went by the local Catholic church and purposely setting off the car alarms. They were laughing and joking and though it was a great passtime.
Meanwhiile, the church has a fair number of Vets, blue-collar workers, families trying to pray and they don't forget this stuff. That bill -- unfortunately -- has widespread support by people from all sides of the political spectrum.
The blame game... more mouth smooches from the mentally challenged...
BTW, if you don't like Kommiefornia laws, vote the dumba$$es out or move.
with any luck you will have a huge earthquake before the new law is enacted...maybe the whole state will fall off the map into the ocean. it is amazing that a state with so many problems has time to worry about motorcycle exhausts. move or shut up.
You should have just stuck with "it is amazing that a state with so many problems has time to worry about motorcycle exhausts". I agree with that...Everything else was unnecessary.
Conservatives will never win in Kalifornia. Too many rainbow branded people, too many liberal idiots, and too many clueless bjewells. They're out numbered and will never win an election. Move away, and hope the next big one makes it an island.
1st Point: The loud pipe crowd has brought on this problem.
2nd Point: I'm wondering if the California motor officers, who made national headlines by installing louder pipes on their motors, will be subject to this law.
Great weather and the ocean, California should be one of the top spots to live in the country. Too bad it's so screwed up, I would still move there if it was even close to affordable. Most screwed up state in the nation.
