I think it's a power/design choice. I did some research and the devices seem directional for maximum effectiveness. They also prefer to be in the center of the lane.
Mass Pike (FastLane) takes a picture of the transaction and as long as the vehicle is a registered fastlane user, it will debit your account automatically. They take a pic on and off regardless if the transponder was picked up or not.
As for toll roads, the Mass Pike is the best maintained road in the entire Commonwealth and I have no problem paying for that.
Just talked to fastpass. They will take up to 2 pictures a month, but charge you $2.00 per pix
What I don't understand is that your Federal and State road taxes paid for the roads, and you let the bureaucrat fat cat's charge you for what you already paid for. Am I missing something?
OK~OK, maybe I'm not the shiny-est marble in the bag, albeit from me, but is there something wrong with this picture?
i used to keep my liscense plate bent forward at a 45deg angle under the box on my expoditer truck(semi boxtruck) i blew thru the ez-pass all the time because the tolls would cost me almost half of what i made.never got cought.. they must not try to hard..
the reason for the tolls is the city/state sells the rites to that part of the road to private bussineses.. you are just customer to some crooked bussiness

for these types of roads the tolls are either "sold" to a private contractor in exchange for money the gov't wouldn't otherwise have (to pay maintenance on the other roads that you use w/o tolls), or the roads themselves are fastracked absent sufficient budget to pay for them (because they are needed now, not 10 years from now) so to defray cost they are toll until paid for. Of course some areas forget that "until paid for" and just keep collecting the tax, which I don't agree with.
if more people would ride bikes, there'd be less traffic and more happy people on the road
In Illinois, we have what they call IPASS. I have one in the car. Went to the IPASS website and registered all the bikes on the same account. I do not even have to carry the IPASS unit with me on the bike. I just go through the IPASS lane. They photo the plate and charge my IPASS account as though I did have the unit on the bike. Great system here (and when I am on the ULTRA, the camera cannot get a good view of the plate because it is tucked under the tourpack, so all tolls are free.)
just a fyi they will send you a bill for the tolls, they sent me one for 3 years of missed tolls cost 4k with fines and after a LONG phone conversation got it to just the toll amount without fines. long story short she said they don't take the money out if you don't have the ipass unit with you. you'll get a bill in the mail it's just that they are very backed up.
I thought I read somewhere that there is a paint that is clear ... if you happen to spay your plate with it that cameras can't read it even though you can't tell it is that way by looking at it. Sounds interesting ... especially where they have cameras to record plate #s on vehicles going above speed limit, tolls, repo men driving around in the trucks with cameras that are feeding plate #s to a database to ID vehicles (or at least the plate) on loans that are late ... I don't worry about the last one.
mine has always worked fine in my windshield bag, going to ocean city a couple of weeks ago I went through my first ones at 60 mph, the ez pass lane is just a pole over the road.

that's been a big argument here in NY for a long time
they made us pay to build the thruway and it was supposed to stop when it was payed for which was years ago
yep, just like government, once they start taking in money, they get used to it and don't want to stop. after the original thing is paid for, they'll bs some new way to use this money coming in. course, they would never use it to pay for something that they are already in the red in, got to be 'new'.....
