Default Fix a flat

I was just reading a post on what riders have on hand for long rides. So instead of hijacking that post I'll start a new one.

Of those of you that carry it is there a special version of fix a flat for a smaller motorcycle tire?

I've heard in the past that once you use Fix a flat the tire can never be patched. Is this true?

I also hear someone mention that they "slime" the tires so they cannot get a flat. What is "slime'?

I carry a can of flat repair (I use Slime brand for tubes) for tube type tires. I wouldn't consider patching a tube except in an emergency. For tubeless, there are any number of plug kits that work much better and can fit (including compressor) in a saddlebag. Using FAF in a tubeless tire makes a mess, but it can be cleaned up with some of the newer blends. I don't know why it would stop you from plugging the tire or running a tube later.

I've never seen a different version of fix-a-flat for motorcycle tires. Slime is a liquid that you put in the tires before you get a flat. It is also supposed to hel balance the tires. I've heard that is ti somewhat corrosive and difficult to clean up when changing the tire. there is another product called ride-on that I've heard good things about and it is supposed to be water soluble and much easier to clean up. If you take a flat to a dealer, most will not patch a tire anyway. Liability is an issue.

Fix a flat will get you home, just use about half a can. It does make a mess and is very difficult to clean off the inside of the wheel. As stated above, for a tubless, just but a plugging kit and a small compressor

I did not mention it but I do have tubeless tires.. Sounds like a plug kit with compressor may be the thing to get.

Thanks all.

Yep, BTW The small slime brand one is popular. You can find them in many stores. As for plugs these days I use the sticky rope ones (used to use the tapered plugs and rubber cement). There are also mushroom shaped plugs but I haven't tried one.

I would consider a plug kit with the CO2 inflater. They may take up less room in storage.

I carried one of those on both my and my wife's bikes on a West Coast trip several years ago. It worked, but only got the tire to 20psi using all the cartridges in both kits. I'd make sure to carry extra.

I slime everything, truck, bikes, atv's, tractor, lawn mower wheel barrow, everything. I simply do not get flats........ ever.
I can't speak for tubed tires but have heard that slime makes a product for them.
Slime does not ruin a tire or rim. It is not hard to get out as it really just beads up until it finds a leak to plug. I also firmly believe it does help balance the tire.
I buy it in gallons at Tractor supply.
FAF does make a mess though. Before I discovered slime I used to carry a truck sized can of it when I went on long trips. Used it once the whole can after I plugged the hole. Got me home.

Just say SLIME!
