Can I get a Sportster for $3500 MAX?

I had a Shadow 750 and it was fine. Wanted that VStar 650 Silverado as I thought it was a good looking ride for the money. But I would seriously re-think that Rebel. Imo, they are borderline unsafe for the road. No power and just a feeling of not much bike, like a step above a moped

Some of you have may have seen some of my posts. My wife and I are kind of all over the place as to where we are with our first bike purchases. We both love Harleys, but have a combined amount of $6500-$7000 MAX for our first bikes. We are saving up for our dream Harleys, but want to get something cheap for now so we can at least get out on the road and ride. I have been primarily using ebay and craigslist for my search. I was going to get her a 2009 Honda Rebel, and myself a 2002 Yamaha V Star 650, but the idea of not riding a Harley is bothering us. Also, many of you have said that with my weight (260lbs), I will not enjoy riding the 650. What I am asking is, is it possible to get a decent (no rust, mechanically sound, etc...) Sportster for $3500. It seems that the ones on ebay that end at that price do not meet reserve.

My wife and I had the same problem. I didn't have any type of motorcycle when she decided she wanted to start riding and we both wanted harley or nothing - I had Hondas before but she was even more set on HD than me.
We got 2 Sportsters for under $11,000 combined from a dealer.
I have seen plenty for around the $3,000 range and you could find them, but they are rare at dealers for that price. If you have $7,000 cash, buying to Sportsters from individuals should be no problem. Heck, I'll sell you mine for $3K - runs great and I ride it almost every day, but I'm looking to get a softail.
