Default tip

Selling it yourself should leave more money in your pocket. A dealer will buy wholesale and sell retail. You could sell yourself for somewhere in between. Then go make your best clean deal on the new bike.

Keep it the original paint--don't screw it up yourself. Or have a pro touch it up, if it's that nasty-looking.

Try the paint deal. If it doesnt look good, slap the bag back on and trade.

The bike in the photo looks good enough. I wouldn't waste my time with paint. I can't imagine it would make any difference to a dealer.

Then I agree....trade it in with the bag on it.

Last month I traded in my Train instead of selling it myself due to the slow market. I had a low speed crash a few months prior and had only reapaired the more visable damage. I showed them the remaining parts that needed repair. The dealership still gave me full trade in value. Who knows how many buyers I would have lost if I had tried to sell it with the damage. I got on a new 2011 faster and couldn't be happier.

What is the best reference for trade in values? KBB or NADA? I am trying to get an idea of what I can get for the Softail. I'm getting what you guys are saying about just trade in with the swing arm as is. Other than that the bike is super clean.
