Default Bonded Title

Hello All,

I am thinking of buying a bike from a gentleman that bought this bike from a used m/c dealer 'as junk" He does have a bill of sale from his state DMV for the bike.
I am going to try and resurrect the bike to get a Certificate of Title. Many states have a 'bonded title' routine ,which my state does. i have read all the online documentation for the procedure to do the bonded title.
I was hoping to hear from somebody that has actually been down this road.In other words the bike is actually NOT a lost title or salvaged titled bike.

Any one have any war stories on this routine that would care to share?

Thanks,
BC

If the state that the bike was totaled in is a reciprocal state, ie they have linked DMV data base, then the salvage/loss will show up in the title search, no matter what the status is in the state that the bike was rebuilt. I know this because it happened to me, purchased a bike in MN with a "clear" title, and when it was re-registered in another state, the branded title from the state that originally titled it showed and as a result, I now have a salvage titled bike, and no recourse. It, in the end, means, no one will take it in trade, can't consign it and it is worth about 35% of the bluebook value. The loss will show on a CARFAX search as well, mine did.

Things seem to differ greatly from state to state. I used this proceedure to get a title for a truck in Arkansas years ago, pretty much you buy a bond and agree to forfeit the vehicle if the PO shows up and decides they want it back. In AR it was 3 years, makes you want to leave it sit for the period instead of building. Good luck, and happy riding!
