I have a respect for you guys with back problems that have held yer lives together. 2 guys I know (one used to be a good friend) have back trouble and both turned into drug addicts and it messed up their lives pretty badly

Schumaker;
Just for the record, I never said my life was held together... What kind of drugs are we talking about here...
Had this problem myself which gave me a whole new definition for a 10 on the doctors pain scale of 1-10. Finally got it resolved with a back opeation to trim off part of my disk that was pressing on the nerve. Some good info in these post, especially about the condition of your stomach muscles. Only non-doctor theory I can offer on the two days is - the nerve gets irritated on the ride and goes thru some cycle of irritation and self healing. Heard B12 vitamin helps with that?? Suggest you get referred to a back/spine specialist and get a MRI. My general practice doctor was of no help to me at all, treated the symptom and not the cause.
Last note - I found no pain pill at all that would help -none, unless it completely zonked you out and I can't live like that.

CoyoteMoss; Makes sense about the 2 day deal, maybe it takes the inflammation time to grow and hit the nerve, planning to get the MRI after the Holidays. Stopping at the HD store during lunch to check out the RoadKing Fuzzy....
I actually like the fairing on the SG and purchased one for my RK.
JakeInMa,
AWESOME looking bike... I like the look of the fairing on yours, may be it is the riding lights. Does HD make the fairing? Do I have to get all the gadgets and such? What is the part number? Thanks....
Been battleing sciatica for years. Chiropractor didn't help. New doc just put me on lyrica and it has helped tremendiously. If nothing else helps like different seat, bars, pegs etc, you might think about the lyrica. It's for nerve pain specificly
For my fellow RK riders , I guess that the touring models ARE really made for just that , long riding and so gives a better seating position .
Sciatic nerve pain is caused by preasure on the nerves of the spine due to a herniated disk . The disks in you are sort of cartilage with a jelly like center . In my case the type of work I did causing me to lean slightly forward alot while standing , caused ongoing preasure on the front of my disk , This forced the jelly towards the back of the disk and eventually this stretched the wall of the disk allowing it to ballon out (herniate) and press against the nerve . Strengthening your back and stomach are the best ways to ward this off .
I HAVE had spells where I had to take quite strong painkillers for long periods of time . I am just fortunate to be a person who does not get addicted to things easily , as I was sometimes taking enough pain killers to put many on their asses .
I'm presently trying to loose some of the gut , strengthen by back and stomach and hope to ride many more miles for years to come .
take care of yourself , set your bike up well and I hope you can stay pain free .
Wider seat, back rest, finding the right handle bar position for you, moving the wallet all good responses,, Also think about floorboards, gives you the ability to move you foot position as you ride. I actually have a soft wide seat, back rest, floor boards and highway pegs on my touring bike.
I have back issues that are not related to a disc problem.. I tore a hamstring racing motorcycles years ago,, and it shortened my hammy a bit. The hamstring actually connects above the hip so if you do not keep it stretched it can pinch the sciatic nerve. So a bulging disc can cause hamstring pain, and a tight hamstring can cause back pain. Convenient huh?
If I do not do hamstring stretches everyday, by the third day I start getting back pains.. I also have a hot tub and use it regularly, and I move my wallet from side to side on a regular basis and often wear pants with cargo pockets and put my wallet there.
If your doctor agrees it may be the muscle pinching the nerve, he can write a prescription for hot tub treatments, which will allow you to not pay sales tax if you buy a hot tub.
As far as hamstring stretches I do simple sitting down toe touches.. I start with left leg straight, right leg bent with right foot on the side of the left knee. I touch the left foot 5 times with my left hand, then 5 times with my right hand. I switch to right leg straight and left bent,, and finish with both straight and I grab my pant legs or my legs near my ankles, relax as much as possible and pull with my arms until I feel the hamstrings stretch a little, but not until it hurts.
