I have a DOT pseudo-beanie (about like the one above), and the biggest problem was the visor. Took it off and was much better. The visor created a lift that was like someone pulling it back off my head.

I have one of those carbon fiber DOT helmets. It's very comfortable to wear and it definitely gives your head more protection than no helmet or a beanie. I have noticed the visor causes lifting at highway speeds.

Somebody please enlighten me why your willing to wear a Beanie type helmet, that is pretty usless if/when you go down as to wearing a good helmet that may, just may, save your life. I know all the reasons people say that they don't want to wear one..But if most of you were honest to yourself, and to us, it is the thought of the image that you want to look like, going without, or with a law defying Beanie, you really want to look Cool..how cool is it to leave part of your brain on the roadway after you go down, beleve me, from experince, that ruining a $500.00 helmet was a lot better then my head, and make no bones about it, I would have been dead, instead I got up and rode 100 miles home..

I must say though I respect your right to go without, and I will fight for that right for you..I just want to know why you will put a $200.00 pretty usless Beanie on, when for $200.00 you can wear a 3/4 or full helmet?? lot of the new Fullface helments are pretty light weight, and Harley has come out with a real nice new line of helmets, some are fullface that have a flip up front, which means you can put on and take off the helmet without removeing your glasses..might be worth checking into...[sm=biker.gif]
Bear64, please enlighten me. If I am wearing an ACC beanie helmet that is DOT approved is it still in your opinion useless because it is a beanie and if so, why? or are you just refering to the non DOT beanies?.....................BG

Few years ago I rode the green EH from Broken Arrow, OK (Tulsa) and about 5 miles down the road my helmet actually did peel completely back. Neighbor buddy was driving my car in front and saw me pull off the road, take my helmet off, rip the visor off and throw it in the weeds (cussing the whole time). He was laughing his *** off at that display.

AFA it not protecting me noggin, any accident that would wreck that helmet would kill me anyway, so it really does not matter if others think it unsafe. It is DOT approved, and covers down to the ears.

When I hit a deer at 55 MPH I got slamed on my back, the whole back of my fullface helmet has rocks and gravel in it, I was rideing on a 2 lane sealcoat road in northern ILL>, the left side got ground down and removed the parts and peices that held the viser on, would have taken off part of my ear maybe, it was a fullface Arai helmet, accross the top, forehead high was a deep rip, ground down way past the first layer of material, and accross the chin bar was dug into also...I remember hitting the ground on my back, I do not remember fliping and floping around like a fish out of water, when I came to I was slideing on my back, but stopped laying next to the deer..the deer was dead, I was hurt a little, 4 broke ribs and a little road rash twisted left foot, had on good high boots to., my friends pick up the bike and I rode it back to the Harley shop about 97 miles, $6800 damage to bike..
So you see, in my case a beanie would have done me no good at all..for all intent and purposes I would have probably died right there..massive head trauma, I still have the helmet in the garage the ins. co. replaced it for me..if you think about it, all the damage to my fullface would have been done to me if I was wearing a beanie..Personally, A beanie will protect the top of your head maybe, but not the back or sides, let alone the front of your face. I'm damn glad I had one on, and I have noticed that a lot more Harley riders, at least around here, are starting to wear helments instead of Beanies. I am real glad I had on a good set of boots, a good helmet and a good leather jacket, some small rips and tears in it but I sewed it up and wear it to this day. had the boot repaird and still wear it.But I still think you should have the right to decide for yourself..[sm=biker.gif]

My exwife never wore a dot, just a beenie, thought it looked cool , it did. She was killed in a 2001 bike wreck from massive head trauma. There wasnt a scratch on her face or body. I was in the hospital when she died 3 days later, she was as pretty as her wedding day. DONT WEAR A BEENIE.

This is not for bashing, just some real feedback. I have never worn a real helmet, so take that in mind. I have tried a dot half helmet and it felt like it was going to tear my head off over 65 mph. Too much wind resistance. I dont do windshields so thats out. Well i stumbled across a beannie type helmet that fit well and snug, and had a little bit of padding inside. Love the way it looked and feeled on my head. Almost couldnt tell i was wearing helmet. I asked the girl at the shop if it would be better wearing that helmet than none. She said no, novelty only. I still to this day cant grasp that. How could not wearing a helmet be better than wearing something with a little padding and a hard shell. What do you think on the matter. I hate helmets but am willing to wear that beannie.

what this post boils down to, i want to hear from someone who went down with a beannie. How was the outcome? Did the beannie help more than hurt. Keep in mind, i dont currently like or wear a helmet.
