If you want current legal tags, you will pay sales, use, or personal property tax (or a combination) depending on what the laws in your state are. In WA we pay sales tax at time of titling, but our tags are low ($35 plus transfer fees).

here in canada its simple you buy something the goverment adds 16% of the value tot the price and the seller remits that 16% to them, in the case of vehicles private sales the 16% is collected by the dmv Based on the blue book value of thw vehicle, dealer sales the dealer collects the taxes at time of sale and remits it to the DMV for you, also that 16% is also added to any services rendered as well as goods sold

When you register it, you will either pay sales tax on sale price or black book value depending on the discrepancy between the two.

in america you bust your *** to get it, the goverment takes it and gives it to those who don't like to work. It's a little more complexed but that's the basics of it all.

Sales tax on what you actually paid. Buy from a private individual, no sales tax.

Excise tax according to their book at the BMV.

Just bought a bike out of state and when I registered it I was pleasantly surprised. Only state sales tax, but no city and/or county sales tax. Saved a few hunirt.

I can't understand how someone can buy a bike off Ebay--when I buy a vehicle, ESPECIALLY a bike, it takes me about 2 hours of real close scrutiny, checking oil, pulling plugs, checking fasteners, compression, charge check, makeing sure everything works, test ride, etc. before I plunk down money.

This may be comparing apples to oranges(state to state)but when I bought my new bike in Nevada,I had to pay the estimated Ca. sales tax(for my county)at time of purchase. Then I had to pay the Ca. registration after a VIN inspection in Ca.
