What happens if they take off on my bike and get injured or killed. Guess what I could loose everything in a lawsuit. Not worth it.

You'll know the buyer's serious of they show w/cash-in-hand. That's the only safe/secure way to work a fair deal...IMO.

Read in a Cycle Mag once that the way to do it is consumate the sale with a 1 hr. "return" clause if no damage done to bike. Start it up for him, run it up and down the road, etc. first.

The biker gang I bought my bike let me ride it all I wanted. Those were some cool dudes. See one of my old posts for the story on that.

I've sold several bikes with a 24 hour money back offer. For whatever reason or no reason they can bring it back within 24 hours (the same as they took it) and get their money back.

For all the good reasons mentioned here, plus some others, I don't let anyone ride my stuff. If that causes a problem for the prospective buyer I don't know. I've never had one say anything, and if it's a problem there are other buyers and other bikes. I've had mostly a very positive reaction to my 24 hour offer.

24 hrs. is generous; do you sleep at all that night? I'd say an hour is plenty of time to tell if you like the bike. I can tell in the first mile. Glad it's worked out for you btw.

I wouldn't buy without a test ride, a long test ride.

No problems at all. I know there is nothing wrong with the bike. I give people the time to get the bike checked out if they want by a mechanic. I guess someone could decide to **** with me, but I live in a rural area, and most people are pretty good around here.

There's a lot of talk about "test rides" on this forum. Where I come from that would be unusual. Start it up and listen but to ride you need cash. Of my 4 Harleys I test rode one.
There's a kind of "if you're not happy, bring it back" attitude but not many test rides.

+1 You are 100% correct. Your insurance doesn't cover test rides. The guy falls off your bike and claims it was defective and sues you. Since he is uninsured on the bike...you have to defend a lawsuit which your insurance won't cover. Have fun.

When I sell I'm probably not going to make any money-back offers. And I like cash money in hand before test rides. If they have questions about the bike, I will give them Jud Cowley's (my mechanic) phone number.
