[QUOTE=PigInaBlanket;7856087]...there is a hold on tax forms like mine until Feb 14th...[QUOTE]
Thank the lame-duck Congress for that(!) Lots of rule changes passed at end of the year, IRS could not react to update forms fast enough; that's why the IRS is not accepting any electronically-filed returns with itemized deductions before Feb 14th.
And don't think that you'll get a jump on it by mailing a return in now -- IRS has stated that on Feb 14th it will start processing e-filed returns first, then get around to mail-ins later.
Folks, be careful before you go out there and start spending that cash. In Georgia, they realized they had overpaid citizens $633,000 due to some "computer error". So instead of going after the people who they overpaid the $633,000 to, the state government did a recall on all $12,000,000 they had already paid out. This affected over 30,000 taxpayers & lots of people had bounced checks. Someone was just too lazy to go in, figure out the problem, pull the money from the ones overpaid and then fix the problem.
OH, BTW, been in computers since 1975 and they don't make errors. They are programmed by humans and data is entered by humans. So if a mistake was made, IT WAS HUMAN.
Oh, crap! I live in Georgia, and I'm filing my taxes next week. Did they get it straightened out? Do you have primary source material on the error? (GA DOR docs or news reports?
I hate having to pay at the end of the year, so I always pay WAY too much on each paycheck throughout the year. I know, I know, I shouldn't loan the guvment money, but what the hell, if I took that same money and threw it in a savings account, I'd make, what, maybe $2 of interest? So, I'm a fan of the forced savings plan, and this year my refund has bought me nearly $1k worth of Snap-On stuff, and also, my lady friend and I will be taking a weeklong visit to Prague in April. All thanks to the BRGTR3 savings plan.
If I would have had that extra money in my pocket throughout the year, I just would have blown it on wine, women and song (and not in that order!).
This is a pet peave of mine....It is not a tax REFUND!!!! Its your freakin money. You are giving out a free 0% loan to an organization that has a long history of wasting money.
People are better off putting that money in a savings account and collect 2-3% interest.
I keep offereing people to give me 5K interest free and I will return it in 14 months....The offer stands here. Give me the $$ and I will gaurentee its return with zero interest. Any takers?
I have it figured out pretty good. I have been in the plus or minus $100 range the last 5 years...this is ideal. I have the difference automatically deposited to my Credit Union that does not have an ATM attached to it. I get 3% in stead of ZERO.
I really do not care if it is my money. I would have pissed it away or went into the budget never seen again. I like the check once a year that is my play money for the bike and new ink

I personally don't care if I loose out on $4 of interest annually. I make a good living, and don't really miss it. I truly view it as a forced savings plan that gives me a great spring surprise that I can (and do) spend on just "fun" stuff. (And yes, I already max out my 401K, including additional catch-up contributions because I'm 50+, so it's not like I'm not already saving $$).
By the way, I am an auditor by trade, so I know what I'm "missing".
