I just put a Walters Workshop brake lever on my 00 Heritage. Quick and easy, seems to be of really good quality. The pedal sits further forward than on the stock lever, (especially mine, was the older version almost in the middle of the footboard) and lower. Lower may be an issue if you have big feet like me and still want your foot to rest under the pedal. One of my pairs of boots is a bit of a squeeze under the pedal.
Overall, it's a comfortable position and the braking action is good. Almost forgot - my boards are extended forward just over an inch too, so the pedal doesn't appear as far forward as it is.
I got the matching shifter lever too, and that was actually TOO long, so changed to one from Softbrake that is only 1 1/2 inch over stock.
Hope this helps.

sorry for the sideways photo - I can't make it stand up!?
