Default Pulley Torque Conflict

2010 FXDC, I'm installing the HD stinger wheels with a HD billet pulley using the HD chrome sprocket hardware kit and am finding the instructions in the hardware kit different to the service manual.

Hardware kit says:
- Tighten bolts to 23ft/lbs and an additional 60 degrees rotation.

Service manual says:
- tighten bolts to 60ft/lbs,
- back off 180 degrees
- final tighten to 77-83ft/lbs

So which is correct? The first doesnt seem like much - even with red loctite.

I would go with the service manual. Go easy, because you are threading into cast aluminum. Get a feel for that 60ft.lbs. and if you can go another 15-20ft.lbs. I don't now what effect, if any the chrome bolts will have on the torque specs. Maybe that's why the instuctions are diff. Don't know what kind of stretch the chrome will allow on the bolts. Don't forget the RED LOC-TITE.

I would ask a service tech at the dealer, I am sure they have put on a few. usually I would say go with the manual. but with the billet and the chrome bolts??? you don't want to break the the stuff. but 23lbs seem pretty low, and scarry for the part it is.

HD instructions are for HD wheels...

Instructions that come with new wheels are for the new wheels....

figure it out,, ain't rocket science.

IN case U don't,,, I'd go with the wheel makers instructioins,,, cause if U mess up the threads,,, guess what their going to ask U if U call them because U have problems .....

Get your torque wench and do 23 ft lbs plus 60 degrees ...I bet it is more ft lbs than you think. I would follow the directions of the hardware you are using.

What he said.

Go with the instructions that came with the bolts. Theres a reason it differs from the manual.

The 23ftlbs is to make sure the bolt is seated. Tightening 60 degrees, rather than ft lbs (torque), removes any error produced by friction in the threads of the fasteners.

.......and don't forget the red loctite! You sure don't want those bolts backing out while you are riding.

Well, I went with the hardware instructions then set my torque wrench th 83 ft/lbs and it clicked without moving so its got more the the manual calls for.

I always use my beam torque wrench on instructions that calls for a degree measurement versus a ft lb. That way I can see where the final spec really is.
