Please let me know how it turns out. I have the extended warranty, but have done a lot of my own work. I absolutely can't stand dropping it off at the dealer, cause I never know when I'll see it again, not to mention some of the boneheaded things that have been done by these "professionals". If I can diagnose it, and do the research on the fix, I end up doing it myself if it is cost effective. Major issues (main bearing, transmission etc.) I have to be at their mercy. The forum has been a lifesaver on many many occasions!

Is this a common thing to wear out on a mostly stock bike (stage 1)?

lol....I know what you mean about the noise...mine made the "noise" at the publix shoppin center last week and i swear everyone there turned around to see what it was.....I don't think its a common thing to wear out (compensator)...i have had 4 new harleys since 1982 and have not ever changed one....my starter problems have always been either loose or dirty connections/worn brushes in starter...etc....Good luck!

My '02 Heritage sometimes sounds like something is trying to rip the motor out of the frame when starting when hot.

A friend has a '99 Road King that's been doing that for years and lots of miles.

I'll just replace the whole starter with a good strong aftermarket one when I fix it.

I'll keep ya posted. I also try to turn the wrenches on mine when ever I can. I feel the same way about dropping mine off at the dealer to. I have been lucky when dropping it so I hope that trend continues. I plan on trying to get it down there this week if I can get a day that its not pooring rain.

I had the same problem with my '08 FXDC, pretty frequently, and was told that it could not be fixed under warranty because it was a known anomaly with that year bike. Independent research showed me that no one else I know with that bike was having the same problem (sample size: 2). I then took the bike to an independent shop for fork seal replacement and it rarely happened again after that. I have no idea why. But I ended up solving the problem for good by trading it for a new Road King (not for that reason, but it did solve my problem ...)

Well I took the bike to the dealer yesterday, and figure as my luck would have it, the bike would not duplicate the problem. I even road it fro awhile b4 going . So I ended up spending $75 for diagnostic as the extended warranty doesnt cover the diagnostic portion unless they find something.Guess I'll have to ride the bike around one day and stay in the local area of the dealer so I can get it there when it does it again. All in all I wasted my day and $75 so not very happy.

Please note, your new 2011 comes from the factory with the screamin eagle compensator. That could've been it.

The stock compensator and starter are both weak. There are guys on this forum that UPGRADED the starter and it fixed the problem. (Starters cost more than an SE Compensator) Other guys have been through more than 3 oem starters until they replaced the factory comp with the SE Comp. Other guys like me just replace the comp with the SE Comp and it fixed the problem, made take off and shifting smoother as well. If I waited any longer I'm sure I would've needed a new starter as well.

If I was rich, I'd want to buy the SE Comp for the OP just to see if it fixes the problem. Please keep us posted!

This is exactly what I went through! They seemed to know what the problem was. I asked, "Please check my starter, ring gear, and compensator." I returned with new spark plugs and a bill for about $200.00!!! They never opened the primary. Long story short: I bought a simple scissor jack for motorcycles on Amazon, an SE Compensator, Primary locking tool, and did it myself. I think if you do your starter or compensator it will fix the problem. I think both are a factor, but an upgrade of either shoud fix the problem.
