Default Derby Cover Switch

Through the search, I found some good information on switching out my stock derby cover (i.e. keep bike flat so no loss of fluids, replace the gasket, etc.).

I was thinking I could do this myself until I read where you have to install with the proper torque. I didn't see any information in the searches on the torque details. The HD install instructions say to torque the cover 84-108 in-lbs. First, let me confess my lack of knowledge on torquing. That said, should it be closer to the 84 in-lbs or to the 108 in-lbs? Also, every torque wrench I have seen is made for ft-lbs. I'm sure there's a conversion chart somewhere to go from in-lbs to ft-lbs.

I know you guys have plenty of experience in this area. And I know you won't be shy in telling me if this is something I should avoid. No harm, no foul and no offense will be taken on my part. Thanks!

There are plenty of in/lb torque wrenches out there. Mine came from Sears. But to get ft/lbs from in/lbs just divide by 12. Therefore, 84-108 in/lbs is 7-9 ft/lbs.

You can do it, they just don't want you cranking them Harley tight. The stock bolts are made out of butter and strip easy. Get better bolts and you'll be fine. Never torqued one in my life. Snug em up and go.

the key is to not overtorque them. i like to use anti-seize on them as well. also, its a good idea to alternate which bolt you are tightening (think of it like changing a tire). and you can do this on the jiffy stand. if you lose fluid, its overfull.

don't overthink the torque. it isn't high pressure behind it, it just has to be snug.

but the biggest, most important thing to remember is: use a t27 torx, NOT a t25.....

I was trying to buy a T-27 socket at VatoZone yesterday and the counter idiot told me they were sold out, "but the T-25 should work fine for it." I wanted to strangle him.

i guess he would tell you that a 14mm wrench would work just fine for a 1/2 nut too.....
