Depends on where you're riding...some areas require them, some don't. As for me, when I were one it'll be DOT.
But...stupid is as stupid does. There's plenty of discussion on this already. You might as well put on your flame retardant clothing...

In Georgia, I wear a DOT 1/2 helmet. When I go to Florida I don't wear a helmet. If I am going to wear a helmet at all it's going to be a real one.
