$3K to $3500 tops.

Unless you just want to tool around town or have a bike to ride occasionally, look for a used 1200. You should be able to find '04 - '06 1200 Custom in the ballpark of $5 to $6K. There are usually a ton of Sportsters for sale. A good number of people buy them and decide they don't like riding, don't have the time to ride, or move on to a different bike.

Are you going to be doing much highway riding? An 883 is wound up at 75. If you are dead set on a sporty get a 1200 for sure. Better yet spend a little more and get a Dyna with the big twin. Used bike market is crap right now. Prices are so low that everybody that sells right now is taking a beating.
Everybody always tells me to look at the Dynas. I really need to sit on one I guess. What really attracts me to the sportster is the standard riding position. I REALLY like it. I have stubby legs. I can't even flat foot on a Honda Shadow RS (29.4in seat height). I'm about 5'7 but I have a short inseam. I also dislike the wide gas tanks on many cruisers. Sitting on the sportster feels almost perfect, and that is the primary reason why I'm looking so hard at them. Though, it doesn't hurt that Harleys are incredibly beautiful, full of character, and have such a passionate rider base either!

Based on your last post, stick with a Sportster. They are great bikes and I know personally that you can ride one (883, 1200, or even the old 1000) all over the US if you really want to. Before I saw the ad I was thinking $3500. 49 seems high. Bargain where you are comfortable. You won't regret buying it if it is in as good shape as it looks even if you overpay. Happy miles make one forget dollars. Good luck.

That is low miles for an '04 but I agree with the other that the price is a bit high even though it looks great. Maybe $3500.00 would be more in line.

That's less than my wife paid for her 2005 883 a couple of years ago. People may claim you can by Sportsters all day for $3,000 - if so, tell them to find you one and buy it. I saw one from the mid-90's or late 80's for $2,995 at a dealership once...once. They just don't go down in value all that much. $4,000 would be a steal if it runs good.

Low miles? My buddy just bought a '07 UC with 950 miles.
