Electrical Problem
I have a 2008 Harley Nightster with 6,000 miles on it. September 2010 I was riding and the check engine and battery light came on. I parked the bike, I went to start it the next day and it would click but not turnover. The local dealership checked it out and replaced the turn signal switch modulator which was burnt out. They could not find any further problems. 3 weeks ago riding the bike and it did the same thing again. I took it to a different dealership thinking it was the same problem. They could not find anything wrong with it and recharged the battery and it has started everyday since. It is still at the dealership, due to no time to pick it up. Does anyone think there is a deeper problem and the mechanics cannot figure it out. Someone told me it maybe the regulator or the stator. The warranty runs out in November and I don't want this problem reoccurring after my warranty runs out. If it happens one more time, I'm selling the bike and buying a foreign bike, which I have owned 5 before the Harley and never had a problem with them.

regulator, check voltage coming to battery,should be 13-15 VDC. if less than 13 or more than 15 bad voltage regulator. stator, check it at 1000, 2000 and 3000 rpm at the plug at the front of the bike engine case should be 16 VAC at 1000 ,32-40 VAC at 2000 and 48-60 VAC at 3000 RPM.
