i have a 2000 road glide fltri with 74k miles last week i was riding home about a 300 mile ride i average 1500-2000 miles a week during the summer i was about 3/4 way home and the engine light came on and my voltage was dropping quickly some how i made it home with the bike sputtering as i was pulling into the garage. i tested the stator and everything checked out had the battery tested and 2 different places and its fine. decided to replace the voltage regulator, after i put the new one in everything worked just fine for about 5 miles and the battery quit charging and the regulator was very hot to the touch, got another replacement today but this time i only made it about a half mile before it quit working. what am i missing here i checked all the fuses and wire i cant find any shorts or warn wires all the connections are tight and clean. 3 regulators in a week what could be the issue any help would be amazing i dont want to sell this bike cause i cant fix it and cant afford to have the dealer kick the tires and charge me more than the bike is worth.
first i checked to see if it was shorted out by testing resistance all was clear then fire up the bike and checked the voltage the stator was putting out and at an idle it was 25 and some change voltage went up as the rpm smooth gain in voltage then checked the battery voltage with the bike off then with it running and voltage never passed 12.25 and the voltmeter in the faring will not go past 10 volts
thats what i went off of the first time i replaced the regulator and did the same procedure today and going off that it points to the regulator but less than a half mile and it dies?? idk if my luck is just that bad with regulators or if something else is wrong
Check the plug really well. If the rubber is soft and spongy it could be corroded and causing it to be shorting out. I'd think about replacing the stator. Generally one item will take out another.
yes i did load test the battery i took it to two different places to make sure it was not the battery i will check the voltage output of the stator again at 3000
just checked it again and it puts out 75 volts at 3k rpm no problem, while i was there i plugged in the regulator again and it started getting hot almost instantly
