I had an Independent Harley mechanic tell me that he has never bought a new Harley since the 1984 evo because all the engine parts are Japanese? Made by Kawasaki? I know that allot of after market HD chrome is made in Taiwan but the engine parts?[:@]
In 2003 I went to the 100th Anniversary bash that Harley threw in Milwaukee. One of the events was a tour through their engine plant. They were casting and machining most of the parts there in house--or at least that's what they showed us.

I would say the opposite is just as true. The japansese really raised the bar in the end of the 60s, both in reliability and performance. That's when the real competition began, and I think with the release of the CB750 every motorcycle manufacturer realized the need to develop to stay in business. I would say Harleys today are much better than they would've been without the competition. Competition works both ways, and it's you and me, the customers, who are the winners in the end.

This "Content" is another con perpertrated upon the American consumer. If a product has only x percent japanese parts then it is still a American product. Whose bull shatting who? There isn't one item of clothing in a harley store that isn't made in Japan or some other half *** country. The Goldwing has MORE American parts then a Harley and by that measure is more of a American bike then a harley.

The harley is a half breed or at best maybe just a quarter but still tainted by non-American parts.

We are largely to blame for Japans manufacturing technologies today. Pre-WWII they were a *** backwards country with little industry. We bombed them. Crippled them. Then went over spending millions if not billions rebuilding their country and educating them on mass production. They took what we taught them and excelled in industry.

I met him in 1984; GM was working with him on the Pontiac Fiero! Guess they didn't listen very well. He is the for runner to sic sigma statistical process control that 22 years later is new again.

Wasn't the Fiero the one that kept catching on fire?
