Some people wear helmets, some don't and some wear novelties. All are respected.. your choice. I sometimes do and sometimes don't.
Does someone do an in-between helmet that's not fully DOT (mushroom head) and not just plastic novelty?
I'm thinking of a leather shell, 1/2 helmet novelty look, with armor lining (like our jackets) and straps.
This would help with skidding, but not banging. half dot? I'd assume this does exist, but hard to tell with pictures online.
I just read that novelty helmets "don't do any good". but i've never seen one up close.
A lot of folks on here will not agree (some had bad experiences with ACC). Check out Composite Craft. They make a non-dot helmet with Ensolite liner , shell is Carbon Fiber and Kevlar. I have read testimonies from folks who have wrecked in them and seen pics of the helmets afterward (not your typical novelty).
Thay have a vidoe on Facebook now of a Hummer pulling up and parking on one of there helmets (not your typical novelty).
I have one and just ordered my 2nd last week, extended half shell in natural chrome, even got free leather ear flaps and free shipping this time.
It's not DOT, but I know it's better than nothing at all......

no such thing. it is either dot compliant or not. no in between. but in keeping with the spirit of your post, the outlaw carbon fiber helmet is dot, and is not huge. be careful with the sizing though. i bought my normal size (medium) and it was too small. i 'smooshed' the lining with a hammer, and sanded down some of the styrofoam and now it fits pretty good. nowhere near dot compliant any more, but hey, its got the decal and the label
If I remember correctly, the only thing the ACC did not pass was the spike test. I am also prety sure the original intent of these helmets is for hardcore white water rafting, where people ocassionaly bounce there melons of the rocks.
If you can drive a Hummer on it, must be somewhat structurally sound.

Here in Vermont this year they are now cracking down on non DOT helmet use. They are stopping people in force and no longer need another reason to stop you. Also if you get stopped for a non DOT, they will peg you an additional 75.00 fine for not having 4 square inches of relective material on your helmet. Ask me how I know. I broke down and tried every conceivable helmet out there trying to find something DOT I could live with. I ended up with a Vega XTS Naked DOT. If you have to where a DOT it is the helmet to have. Its well made, fits good and it is light. I tried many other of the so called smallest available DOT and even though they look smaller in pictures, they are not. They all have the required 1" padding inside and they all seemed to set on top of my head, hence the so called Mushroom head look. The Vega sits nice and low on my head and looks good. Give it a look see. http://www.amazon.com/Vega-Naked-Bla...ies/B002MQ4RXQ.

You can drive over any number of non DOT helmets and they will stay together. Apparently what makes the difference, it the impact absorbing ability of the foam inside. Its suppose to work much like the crumple zones in a car. The styro inside the helmet compresses and absorbs the impact that your brain would normally be taking with your skull as it impacts the pavement at speed. I'm no engineer and I am also a firm believer in; your an adult responsible for your own actions so do what you want to do. No motive here. Its just what I read in some literature.
