You guys really think about this ****? I'm skilled enough to put down left, right, or both however the mood strikes me.I can stop just fine with the front brake and I can even swap feet once I'm stopped to to shift or brake as required!
I usually come to a wobbly stop, both left and right floorboards dragging alternately as I weave to an uncertain stopping point, then jam on the front brake and throw my legs out to catch myself, toes dragging until the bike slows to the point where I can get my feet out in front to steady myself on tippy toes. And then hope like hell I made it all the way down into first gear or I'll have to burn the clutch for a hundred yards or so until I get enough speed up for whatever gear I'm in.
Generally its both feet down with the right coming down a split second after the left as it comes off the brake. Unless its on a hill and then its left foot only down and right on the rear brake.
I like to sometimes stand up, stretch and air out the "boys" at stop lights.
And FYI regarding the balancing skill comment...
If you put "anything" down on the road you aren't balancing the bike any longer.

I usually go both feet down, but every stop is a single event.
When on a divided road the uphill camber may not always be on the left side.
This thread is exactly one of the reasons why people have stupid accidents. Someone gets on here and says something is the gospel and a new or inexperienced rider who hasnt learned to think for himself or use common sense blindly follows the herd.
Stupid.

On my last couple of touring bikes I put my left foot down only. On my 2005 SE Fat Boy, which is lowered in the rear and has a low seat it is more natural to put both feet down.
When I road a chopper, which had a very low seating position, I usually put both feet down and stood up if there was a car that hadn't come to a stop behind me. I also blip my break lights. I figure it makes it easier for approaching cars to see me. I had a friend crippled, by a car running into him from behind, when he was stopped.
