I also have a set of Draggin Jeans for long rides, they are Kevlar lined and damn near indestructible.
They are heavy, and a bit warm (not for 85+ weather), but they offer protection that is on par with leather pants...without the cost or weight (or look) of leather.
Video:
No doubt those are good protection from road rash. From what I've seen on the web, anyway.
I think the way they "proved" them in the advertisements could be a bit misleading. How many folks slide down a drag strip? Prolly the smoothest asphalt possible.
I guess what I mean is, the previous posts about mesh jackets given the same conditions may have similar protection characteristics. The pictures of mesh jackets being melted most likely happened on roads that the average rider could encounter...I'd like to see the apples to apples comparison...I guess that's my thought. lol
Very few HD jackets come with armour. Last weekend I bought armor for the perforated leather HD jacket I bought in June. I also have a mesh jacket from Tourmaster. Very comfotable when it is hot out, and certainly better than a t shirt, but I wear my leather whenever I can.
On July 9th I laid down my bike, low side slide at about 35 MPH. I just had on a tee shirt and had a lot of road rash, wish I would have had on my mesh jacket. I had on Diamond Gusset jeans and they did pretty well only went all the way through to the skin in two places and very minimal road rash. I hit pretty hard broke one leg and both arms, rehabbing now and doing well.
It will be interesting when I get back on it I put on mesh, leather and my helmet more often or always. Ride safe folks I sure as hell miss being out on the bike one of the best times of the year to ride in the Chicago area and I am in this damn wheelchair.
The jacket I bought is sitting at the post office, I asked my wife to pick it up to see exactly what I bought. She didn't do it. I'm playing "war games" and can't get to the post office myself this week. I do love me some war games though, gotta keep the troops ready to "fight and win tonight!"
Anyho...the H-D descriptions is:
Men's Americana Mesh Jacket 100% polyester mesh jacket with poly-mesh lining and body armor pockets at elbows and shoulders. Lightweight padding at back waist, with snap-tab mandarin collar, zipper front, and adjustable waist tabs and cuffs. Hydration pockets fit hydration packs sold separately.<snip>
I wonder if the armor comes with it, since the description doesn't list that as "sold separately"?
Unlike helmets there are no minimum safety standards for motorcycle jackets and pants. In a recent study 25% of motorcycle jackets/pants were found to fail in an accident. There are HUGE differences in the protective ability of mesh gear. In order from least to greatest abrasion resistance (polyester, nylon, Cordura, Kevlar, leather). Polyester is way cheaper than say Cordura but not very abrasion resistant and melts in a slide, into your skin. IMO spend some money and get some decent quality gear.
Black also sucks for mesh gear as it is worn in the heat and black absorbs heat.

Yup, GOOD POINTS about there being NO regulation about MC safety equipment, aside from helmets.
Except for Armor, which should be CE approved. I don't think most of the HD line of armor is CE approved though.
Kevlar too, though, varies on it's protective abilities depending on percentage of other fibers. Higher percentage of Kevlar does not equate to more protection, as kevlar without some sort of bonding agent, like nylon, doesn't hold up well, I remember reading someplace. Maybe on the Motoport website..
But yea, I have a mesh PowerTrip jacket, and the zipper just ripped right out. How can I seriously trust a jacket to protect me when it can't survive daily zipping and unzipping?

I have that exact jacket that's in your mail box. I weat it here since it's so darn hot now, have the liner out of it and the armour in it, shoulders and elbows. In this heat I'm wearing a hydration vest if I'm riding after about 11AM.
Haven't had to test it in a fall so can't really comment about how it will hold up, but it keeps the sun off my arms and provides more protection than a long sleeve t-shirt, for sure.
Even though it's black and gets hot in the sun, as long as you're moving the wind comes right through it and it's really pretty comfortable.
I've got a Cortech GX Air Series 2 jacket I use when it's hot. It is a mesh shell with leather elbow, shoulder and back impact panels. Also has CE armor for the elbows, shoulders and back.
